SPECIFICATION OF TAMPING UNIT SLIDING CYLINDER OF CSM


(PART NO. HZGB.100.050.0400.1)

1.0 Scope: This specification covers the dimensional, functional and material
requirements with testing criteria of Tamping Unit Sliding Cylinder of CSM. This
specification may be treated as provisional subject to modifications based on
service performance.

2.0 Reference documents: Following BS code and IS Specifications have been


referred to in this specification. Full sets of relevant drawings and the referred
codes/ specifications, duly incorporating the up-dated corrections/amendments,
shall be available for reference at manufacturer's works.

i) BS: 970 Part II Specification of direct hardening alloy steel.


ii) IS:2062 - 1992 - Steel for general engineering purposes – specification.
iii) RDSO Drg. No.- RDSO/TM/15/20 (1of2) & (2of2) Tamping Unit Sliding
Cylinder of CSM.

3.0 Functional requirement: It is provided in the lifting unit for in-out movement of
tamping units for sharp curve tamping. All surfaces meant for machining shall be
finished as mentioned in the drawing no. RDSO/TM/15/20 (1of2) & (2of2).

4.0 Dimension & Tolerance: Dimensions and tolerances of Tamping Unit Sliding
Cylinder of CSM Machine shall be as mentioned in RDSO drawing no.
RDSO/TM/15/20 (1of2) & (2of2).

5.0 Material:

5.1 Piston & Piston Rod shall be made of steel grade 817M40 (EN24) conforming to
BS: 970 Part- II Specification of direct hardening alloy steel.
5.2 Sleeve, Gland & Clevis shall be made from Steel of Grade A or B (Mild Steel)
conforming to IS:2062-1992 having minimum tensile strength 410 MPa i.e. 410
N/mm sq. with minimum percentage elongation of 23.
5.3 Hydraulic Plug shall be made from free cutting steel
5.4 Bolt shall be HTS make Unbrako, TVS or LPS only as per quantity required.
5.5 Spring washer with each bolt shall be made from spring steel.
5.6 Seal ring provided in assembly shall be accepted brand as Plasser, TrelIeborg,
Parker, Frudenbog (Simirit CFW) or Hallite make.

6.0 Manufacturing Process:

6.1 Sleeve shall be made from heavy duty cold drawn seamless steel tube of
specified material, duly machined, bored and honed.

6.2 Piston Rod shall be made by closed die forging only under belt drop forged
hammer of adequate capacity capable of delivering minimum energy or force
required for deformation during closed die-forging of piston rod. Forging shall be
machined to get final shape.
6.3 Piston shall be duly machined and bolted/welded with Piston Rod by making
inside specified thread.
6.4 Yoke & Gland shall be made by milling and machining process.

7.0 Heat Treatment: Heat treatment of Piston Rod shall be done by induction
hardening of the piston rod to achieve case hardening of 30-35 HRC upto 1.25
mm depth.

8.0 Chromium plating: Hard chrome plating of 0.07-0.10mm shall be done to


provide hard, corrosion resistant surface of the piston rod.
9.0 Marking: Month and year of manufacture and manufacturer's code /
identification shall be engraved / embossed on the non-functioning surface of
Tamping Unit Sliding Cylinder of CSM.

10.0 Inspection and Acceptance Criteria:

i) Each components of assembly offered by manufacturer shall be checked


visually for their surface finish, freedom from defects like porosity, cracks,
improper edges etc. Machined surface shall be checked by any suitable
pneumatic or electronic equipment.

ii) The component found suitable after visual inspection, shall be checked
for their dimensions as per relevant drawing.

iii) Supplier shall produce the certificate that the raw material use for
manufacturing of the components conform to the specified materials as
mentioned in para 5.0.

iv) Manufacturer shall also produce a test result of chemical property/


analysis report of plate/bar/raw material used for manufacturing of the
component.

v) Minimum one no or 2 % sample of the piston rod randomly picked up out


of each lot of consignment before assembly and shall be subjected to
chemical composition test. The consignee shall test the material for
chemical composition at his laboratory or get the material tested in a
reputed laboratory having proper facilities for testing. Before sending the
samples for testing, the same shall be duly sealed and secret coding shall
be done.

vi) After found ok in all respect cylinders shall be assembled for pressure test
at 1.5 times working pressure 130kg/cm2 on test bench. There shall be no
leakage at any port after giving to and fro motion of the piston.

vii) Any deviations in the test result from the requirement of the specification
and drawing shall be the cause of rejection.

11.0 Packing and Protection: Each complete cylinder shall be supplied duly spray
painted (golden yellow) over a coat of primer which should be applied only after
making the surface smooth with the help of putty and shall be packed in card
board case.
