1. Course Description
In College English 1, students learn basic communication skills necessary in an English
academic environment. In addition to improving receptive skills (reading and listening)
through various class activities, students will sharpen their productive skills by completing
writing assignments and delivering a short academic presentation. By the end of the semester,
students should have improved their fluency and confidence in classroom discussions
conducted in English, acquired clearer understanding of English grammar, and expanded their
vocabulary. All class activities will take place online via zoom.
2. Textbook (Required)
Vargo, Mari and Laurie Blass. Pathways: Reading, Writing, and Critical Thinking 3. National
Geographic Learning. Second Edition. 2018.
Additional short readings may be assigned and posted on eTL.

4. Attendance
More than six absences from class will result in an F. Three or more absences will result in a
lowered grade. Three late arrivals count as one absence. Arriving more than twenty minutes
after the class begins or leaving early without the instructor’s prior permission also counts as
an absence. Exams, presentation, and other in-class works cannot be made up or rescheduled
without the instructor’s prior consent. Turning off your camera may be considered an absence
and will negatively impact your grade.
***Missing a class due to 예비군훈련 or COVID-19 is not considered an absence.
***A chance to make up for a class or exam may be provided for students who cannot attend
the class due to COVID-19.

1. 우리 학교 기초교양교육과 배움의 윤리
1.1. 배움의 윤리 : 배움에도 윤리가 있다?!
1.1.1. 배움의 윤리는 왜 중요한가?
(1) 표절
배움의 윤리에 어긋나는 행위 가운데 가장 빈번하게 발생하는 것이 표절입니다. 표절이란 다른 사람의
생각이나 글, 실험결과, 통계자료, 도표 등을 출처를 밝히지 않고 마치 자신의 탐구결과인 것처럼 제시하는
행위를 말합니다. 이를 좀 더 자세히 살펴보면 다음과 같은 경우들이 표절에 해당됩니다.
- 출전을 밝히지 않고 다른 사람의 연구결과를 사용하는 경우
- 출전을 밝히지 않고 다른 사람의 자료(도표, 그림, 통계 등)를 사용하는 경우
- 원전과 다른 표현을 사용했더라도 특정인의 연구방법, 논리전개, 문장구조를 모방하는 경우
- 진위 여부에 관해 논란이 되고 있는 역사적ㆍ사회적ㆍ자연적 현상을 출전을 밝히지 않은 채 사용하는
경우
- 출전을 밝히지 않고 여러 사람의 글을 모아서 짜깁기를 한 경우
(2) 자료 위조
자료 위조란 본인이 직접 실험이나 연구를 하지 않은 채 마치 실험이나 연구를 수행한 것처럼 자료의
전체나 일부를 허위로 조작하여 과제물을 작성ㆍ제출하는 경우를 말합니다. 다음 사례들이 자료 변조의
대표적인 경우입니다.
- 실험, 설문, 답사, 통계 등의 경험 자료를 위조하여 과제물을 작성하는 경우
- 사상, 이론, 문학작품 혹은 예술작품 등의 문헌자료 혹은 대상작품을 위조하여 과제물을 작성하는 경우

(3) 자료 변조
자료 변조란 필요한 연구과정을 수행했지만 목표한 결론과 일치하지 않는 부분이 있을 때, 그 전체 혹은
일부를 유리하게 변경하거나 삭제하여 과제물을 작성ㆍ제출하는 행위를 말합니다.
- 실험, 설문, 답사, 통계 등의 경험 자료를 변조하여 과제물을 작성
- 사상, 이론, 문학작품 혹은 예술작품 등의 문헌자료 혹은 대상작품을 변조하여 과제물을 작성하는 경우
(5) 무임승차
무임승차란 말 그대로 공동실험이나 공동연구 및 학습 과정에 참여하지 않고 공동 과제물에 자신의
이름을 올리는 행위를 말합니다.
- 연구 과정과 과제물 작성에 참여하지 않고 공동 과제물에 이름을 올리는 경우
- 개별 과제물을 공동으로 작성한 것처럼 각자 제출하는 경우
(6) 과제물 구매 및 양도
자신이 직접 과제물을 작성하지 않고 인터넷에 있는 과제물 판매 사이트에서 구매한 과제물을 그대로
베끼거나 변조하여 제출하거나, 자신의 과제물을 다른 사람에게 양도하는 행위도 학습윤리에 어긋나는
행위입니다. 참고로, 하버드 대학에서는 과제물 작성을 도와주는 학원 등에서 아르바이트를 하는 행위도
위법이라고 학칙에 명시하고 있습니다.
(7) 시험부정 등
시험에서 남의 답안을 훔쳐보거나 자신의 답안을 보여주는 행위, 담당교수의 허가 없이 참고자료를 보는
행위, 대리시험을 부탁하는 행위 등도 당연히 학습윤리에 어긋나는 행위입니다. 또한 다른 사람의 시험을
방해하거나, 다른 사람이 과제물(창작 전시물 등도 포함)을 훼손하는 행위도 학습윤리에 어긋나는 것입니다.
