Description of Tests
Diagnostic Pretest: The Diagnostic Pretest is based on a readiness for skills taught in this
level of New Keystone. It contains two listening passages: one narrative and one informative. It
also includes two reading passages: one narrative and one functional. Students answer multiple-
choice questions about these passages and about the vocabulary, morphology, phonics,
spelling, and grammar skills taught in the Student Edition. The test includes a writing prompt
based on a type of writing taught in the Student Edition, as well as an oral reading fluency check.
This test provides teachers with a tool for determining which skills individual students or groups
of students may need to improve.
Midterm Test: The Midterm Test measures students’ proficiency with skills taught in
Units 1–3. It contains two listening passages: one narrative and one informative. It also includes
two reading passages: one narrative and one functional. Students answer multiple-choice
questions about these passages and about the vocabulary, morphology, phonics, spelling,
and grammar skills taught in the Student Edition. The test includes a writing prompt based
on a type of writing taught in the Student Edition, as well as an oral fluency check.
Posttest: The Posttest measures students’ proficiency with skills taught in this level of New
Keystone. It contains two listening passages: one narrative and one informative. It also includes
two reading passages: one narrative and one functional. Students answer multiple-choice
questions about these passages and about the vocabulary, morphology, phonics, spelling, and
grammar skills taught in the Student Edition. The test includes a writing prompt based on a type
of writing taught in the Student Edition, as well as an oral fluency check.
Reading Tests: There are three Reading Tests for each unit of the Student Edition, twenty-four
Reading Tests in all. Each test is based on the skills and text selections in the Reading sections
of a unit. Students answer multiple-choice questions about the selections, the literary or key
vocabulary, the Academic Words, word study, reading strategies, and grammar, usage, and

Diagnostic Pretest:
Passage 1: A Man, His Son, and His Donkey
A man and his son were leading their donkey to market. A girl said, “Why walk when
you can ride?” So the man had his son ride the donkey.
Then they heard an old man say, “Look how the young ride while old people walk!” So
the man had his son get down and rode himself.
Soon they met some women who cried, “Look at the tired son and lazy father!” So the
man had his son get on, and they rode into town together.
There a young man yelled, “Two men on one donkey! Maybe you should carry the
donkey!”
So they carried the donkey until they came to a bridge. There were noisy children
yelling. The donkey got scared and jumped in the river.
Without the donkey, the man went home crying, “Try to please everybody and you will
please nobody, not even yourself!”
from more ancient sources. Aesop may have only retold them and made them popular.

Passage 1: The Order of the Planets
Alexa sat at the kitchen table and sighed.
“What’s wrong?” her mother asked.
“I’m trying to study for my science test,” Alexa said, “but I can’t remember the order of
the planets.”
“Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune. Easy!” Alexa’s older
brother Nelson chimed in.
“How could you say those so fast?” Alexa asked.
“Well, instead of remembering the planets in order,” Nelson explained, “I took the first
letters of each planet. Then I made a sentence I could remember.”
Alexa wrote down the letters M, V, E, M, J, S, U, and N in a column on her paper. Then
she thought for a moment. She scribbled some words.
Posttest:
Passage 1: Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
Dear Abby,
My family just spent the past two weeks on a tour of the islands of Hawaii. We saw
so many beautiful and amazing things. The best part, though, was Hawaii Volcanoes
National Park on the island of Hawaii.
We saw two volcanoes, Mauna Loa and Kilauea. Mauna Loa is 13,677 feet above sea level.
It is the world’s largest volcano! Often it is called the “Great Builder” because it enlarges the
mountain when it pours out rock. Kilauea’s crater looks like a saucer hollowed out in a wide
plain. It has been erupting since 1983. We got to see it from the base of the mountain.
It is amazing how something that seems so destructive is actually so important.
The islands of Hawaii are a chain of volcanoes built mostly of lava. Without all those

Passage: Phases of the Moon
At different times of the month, the moon appears to have different shapes. Does the
moon really change its shape?
The moon orbits around the earth, taking about 30 days. The moon doesn’t have light of
its own; rather, you see the moon because of light from the sun. The moon’s shape seems to
change because of how much of it you see in the sun’s light. The shapes are called phases.
A full moon is when you see the whole moon. It looks like an O. After about 7 nights,
you see less of the moon until it looks like a D. This is called a half moon. Then, the moon
wanes to a crescent, looking like a C, until after another 7 days you can’t see it at all. This is
a new moon. Slowly, the moon waxes back to half then full. Then the process starts again!
Unit 2 Test
Passage: Saved Cupcakes
I heard sighs of frustration coming from the kitchen. When I went to see what was going
on, I saw my little brother, Charlie, and a huge mess of measuring cups, spoons, and bowls.
“What’s the matter, Charlie?” I asked him.
“Oh, Maggie, I’m so glad you’re here. I’m trying to make cupcakes for Mom’s birthday,
but something is wrong. This batter looks like soup!”
I looked at the bowl of batter. Then I looked at the recipe.
“How much milk did you put in?” I asked Charlie.
“Two cups,” he said.
I wiped off the recipe and laughed. “You got some chocolate on the page here. It’s
supposed to be ½ cup. The 1 got smudged.”
“No wonder it looks like soup! Now what do we do?” Charlie was getting upset.
“Don’t worry, Charlie. We can add more flour and eggs. We should throw a party with
all these cupcakes!”

Unit 3 Test
Passage: Asteroids
Most asteroids are found between Mars and Jupiter, in what is called the asteroid belt.
There are about 30,000 asteroids in the asteroid belt. Scientists aren’t sure where the
asteroids came from. Some think that there was once a planet between Mars and Jupiter
that broke up and formed asteroids. Others think that there was enough material to make
a planet, but instead of forming a planet, it became a bunch of rocky objects.
Most asteroids are about 18 miles across. One of the smallest, discovered in 1991 and
called 1991 BA, is only about 20 feet across, while the largest, Ceres, is about 600 miles
across. Ceres was the first known asteroid and was found in 1801. Asteroids are divided
into two groups, based on what they were formed from. One group is formed from
minerals that are heated by the sun. The other group is made mostly of carbon.
Listening Passages ix
Unit 5 Test
Passage: Speed Reading
The ability to read rapidly and with good understanding is called speed reading.
There are many ways of learning speed reading. You can practice eye movements with a
machine that flashes words on a screen faster and faster. You can use drills and workbooks
to master certain skills. Howard Stephen Berg claims to be the fastest reader in the world,
reading at a rate of 25,000 words per minute!
Courses in speed reading will teach you how to get rid of or control bad habits that will
distract you or slow you down. Vocalizing is when you pronounce each word or syllable
silently. Regressing is another habit where you go back and reread a number of sentences.
Fixating, or pausing, at long words that you already know is a third habit.
If you set a definite purpose for reading, push your reading speed to a level of slight
discomfort, and give your full attention to what you’re reading, you can read more
efficiently.
Unit 6 Test
Passage: The Birthday Present
Maria looked sad at lunch yesterday. I asked her what was wrong.

Score Criteria
10 The composition as a whole is focused, well organized, and complete. It shows fresh insight into
the writing task. Ideas flow in a logical order, and transitions are used effectively. The writing is
marked by a sense of completeness and coherence. A main idea is fully developed, and support is
specific and substantial. The writing voice is clear and lively. A mature command of the language
is evident in the student’s choice of words. Sentence structure is varied, and the writing is free of
fragments. Virtually no errors in writing conventions appear.
8 The composition is focused on the task and complete, but the organization could be improved.
Ideas flow logically, but the composition may also include some repetition or contain some ideas
that are less developed than others. A main idea is well developed and supported with relevant
detail. The student chooses precise words and has a clear voice. Sentence structure is varied, and
the writing is free of fragments. Any errors in writing conventions are minor and do not impair the
fluency of the writing.
6 The composition is focused on the task, but unrelated material sometimes intrudes. Occasionally,
the writing shifts suddenly from idea to idea without a smooth transition, but the relationships
between ideas remain clear. A clear organizational pattern is present, though lapses occur. The
writing may also include irrelevant information, repetition, gaps in ideas, or lists of undeveloped
ideas. A main idea is adequately supported, but development may be uneven. Sentence structure
is free of fragments but usually lacks variation. The student demonstrates a limited command of
writing conventions. Errors in spelling and punctuation may not obscure meaning but do weaken
the overall fluency of the composition.
4 The composition is focused on the task, but unrelated material intrudes. Some organization is
evident, but the writing lacks a logical progression of ideas. The composition shifts suddenly
from idea to idea without a logical or smooth transition. Support for the main idea is present but
is sometimes illogical. Sentence structure is free of fragments, but there is almost no sentence
variety. The student’s choice of words is sometimes inappropriate for the topic or audience, and
the writing voice is unclear or inconsistent. The composition demonstrates some knowledge of

honor of that brave scientist.
The healthy volunteers at Camp Lazear were separated into two
groups. One group lived in a tent among clothes, sheets, and other
items that had been used by yellow fever patients. This tent was
screened and kept completely free of mosquitoes. No one in this tent

Almost before Adar could finish her question, Aman was ready to
answer. Aman is a strong, athletic Palestinian who does not waste
her words. When she begins to speak, she is both intimidating and
impressive as she defends her opinions.
Calm and composed, she explained to Adar that the presence of
Muslim holy sites in Jerusalem meant that the Palestinians were the
rightful proprietors of the city. With an equally rapid response, Adar
reminded her that Jerusalem also contained Jewish holy sites.
Aman seemed prepared for this answer. “We would be very nice
to you [the Jewish people]. We would always let you come visit your
sites, just like all the other tourists,” she replied.
Adar had no intention of allowing her people to become
theoretical tourists in this debate: “Well, we have the city now,” Adar
said. “You can’t just make us leave, because it’s ours. We might decide
to give some of it to the Palestinians, but it belongs to us now.”

There are other objects smaller than planets and moons that also
orbit the sun. They include asteroids, comets, and meteoroids.
Asteroids are rocky or metallic objects in many sizes and
shapes. Most asteroids orbit the sun in a belt, or group, between the
orbits of Mars and Jupiter. This area of the solar system is called the
asteroid belt. Astronomers have discovered more than 10,000 asteroids.
Comets are large pieces of ice and dust that orbit the sun. When
a comet travels near the sun, the energy in the sunlight changes the ice
into gas. Gas and dust form a tail, which can be hundreds of millions of
kilometers long.
Meteoroids are dust particles or bits of rock that travel through
space. They usually come from comets or asteroids. When a meteoroid
enters Earth’s atmosphere, it burns up and produces a streak of light in
the sky, called a meteor. Large meteoroids may not burn up completely.
Meteoroids that hit a planet or moon are called meteorites.
