Time management for EFL students in Van Lang University who

have part-time job

ABSTRACT

The goal of this study is to figure out how EFL students manage their time when
working part-time. This information was gathered from 100 EFL students at Van Lang
University. The study found that more than 50% EFL students with part-time jobs
consistently said that they do not have enough time to complete all of their assignments.
Students spend less time studying and more time working. The number of students having
part-time jobs is on the rise.To effectively solve problems is to conduct surveys to determine
which trends will affect student learning and employment affecting student learning
outcomes. To properly organize time, we must first establish the connection between
learning and work. Second, we will adhere to tight time management approaches, and
finally, we will come up with remedies for situations when things do not go as planned.
Based on “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” of Stephen R. Covey, if these two
methods ‘staying active and managing yourself’ are used in the research paper, the results
will be mastery of time, a healthy life, scores and learning improved dramatically.
Furthermore, these two approaches are applied to EFL students at Van Lang University.

Keywords: Time management, part-time job, EFL Students

INTRODUCTION

Student’s time could be a restricted resource. Time management is fundamental for

students to preserve effectively in both work-study. Especially for international students,
part-time job has advantages and disadvantages for them. According to the "Vietnam
Investment Review", the world’s student work rate during their studies, nearly 80% of
students in the UK have part-time jobs, 89% in Australia (Nhue Man, 2020), and 19% of
university students in Vietnam have part-time jobs-time work is now 57% experienced.
(Anonymous, 2020).
Taking after that, a huge of number EFL understudies in Van Lang University have
work-study in later a long time. From the insights that we have studied over 100 EFL
students of Van Lang University, over 80 percent of first year recruit and sophomore who
having odd-jobs. Most of them have issues of adjusting work-study are time restricted,
diversion on examining and wellbeing decrease. The term paper is based on “Effects of
Time-Management Practices on College Grades” (Bruce & Abraham, 1991) with the point
of progressing learning effectiveness of EFL understudies indeed in spite of the fact that they
still have part-time job.

Research questions:

1/ How to adjust time between work-study of EFL Understudies in Van Lang

University?

2/ What are the benefits of adjusting time balance for EFL Students at Van Lang
University?

LITERATURE REVIEW

Time management

The process of organizing and planning how to split your time between various
activities is known as "time management". (“What is Time Management?”, Mind Tools)

The term "time management" refers to the careful use of presence of mind techniques.
It necessitates little effort, but it promotes proficient work rehearsals by emphasizing waste.
It encourages us to make more effective use of our time by focusing on our exercises.
("Understanding the Importance of Time Management to Assistant Registrars in the
University of Education's Registrar's Department," Kenneth Abban, 2011)

“Time management" refers to the process of determining and organizing how to divide
your time between specific activities. Great time the board empowers you to work smarter,
not harder, with the goal of doing more in less time. Neglecting to manage your time reduces
your adequacy and increases your stress. (“Global Journal of Commerce & Management
Perspective”, Ritu & Anil Khurana)
Time is a valuable resource that everyone has but does not use to its full potential for a
variety of reasons. All of an organization's material and human resources can be improved or
transformed through time; however, the only asset that cannot be modified, purchased, or
stored is "time". ("An empirics research on time management in organizations which are
living on different sectors " Örücü et al., 2007)

Time management skills when getting a part-time job of EFL Students

Because time is an irreversible factor, time management skills are essential. Arrange a
reasonable time for students in general, and EFL students who are working in particular.

Kenneth, Abban explains that time management teaches people how to properly
manage their lives and time. Everybody has the same amount of time each day, but if you
don't manage it properly and profitably, you could end up losing the entire day's worth of
man-hours. As a result, we must intelligently plan our lives. from a lack of exercise, low
income, unmet goals, excessive stress, a strained relationship, and even an unsatisfied life.

registrar’s department of the university of Education", Abban, Kenneth, 2011)

Previous researchs

The fall 2003 assessment developed by the Higher Education Research Institute at
UCLA’s Graduate School of Education and Information Studies found that only 34% of
today’s incoming freshmen now spent six or more per week to do academic-related work
during their senior year in high school. (Higher Education Research Institute, 2003)

The sample included 276,449 students from 413 of the country's 4-year schools and
colleges, and the data were adjusted to reflect the reactions of all first-time, full-time
understudy attending each of the four-year schools and colleges as green beans in 2003.
Truth be told, in 1987 when this survey was asked of freshman recruits, 47.0% make sure
they worked hard at least 6 hours a week outside of the classroom. The 2002 assessment
directed by the Ministry of Higher Education on first-year admissions had “some concerns”
or “major concerns” about not having enough cash to complete their higher education.
(Higher Education Research Institute, 2003)
The ‘Time Management Behavior Scale' (TMBS) was developed by Macan and
associates (1990) and covers four factors: defining objectives and priorities, creating
timetables and lists of activities, perceived time control, and organizational preference.
(2004) (Assessing Time Management Skills as an Important Aspect of Student Learning)

Time management is a collection of norms, practices, abilities, instruments, and

frameworks that help us use time to accomplish our goals. It refers to the strategies and
procedures that people employ to supplement and improve their work. Managing time well
aids in the development of a superior character in an organization. Time management
enables us to make informed decisions so that we may devote more of our time to activities
that are meaningful and valuable to us. Time management allocates some of one's time to
work and the rest to enjoyment and relaxation. Time management is a collection of devices
that enable us to remove waste, reduce excessive effort, guarantee that long-term initiatives
are not overlooked, organize each day and week properly, and do so with little self-
discipline. (“Understanding the importance of Time Management to the assistant registrar’s
in the registrar's department of the university of Education", Abban, Kenneth, 2011)

A general assumption is that students with good time management abilities can
efficiently manage their time even after graduation and entering the workforce. (The Effect
of the Time Management Skills of Students Taking a Financial Accounting Course on their
Course Grades and Grade Point Averages, Abdülkadir Pehlivan, 2013)

The research scope

The scope of the research is based on the findings of a survey of 55 EFL sophomores at
Van Lang University. 42 of the 55 students interviewed had a part-time work, while the
remaining 13 had no job.We broke down the mid-day break outlines by technique up close
and personal. Interview questions include: Do EFL sophomores spend more time thinking or
working low-maintenance jobs? In their spare time, what do they do? Do they spend their
free time thinking or hanging out? How would they strike a balance between contemplation
and work? The goal of the study is to learn about the challenges that understudies confront
on a regular basis and how they deal with their experiences working in low-maintenance
jobs.
The research significance

The importance of the research is divided into two sections: time the executives and
time balance. EFL students learn how to manage their time and value their time through the
examination. As a result of the outcomes, the subjects will learn how to closely watch time
and balance. Understudies can find ways to balance employment and school while also
finding time to relax.
