MST-101: Living in the IT Era

by: Ramonette Marie Esperida - BSN3 G1

What is IT/ ICT
What is IT and What is ICT?
IT or Information Technology..

The most significant thing to note here is that computers are not just about ICT.
Although IT focuses on hardware and the processing of data by computers, and
computer science focuses on theory and programming, ICT takes a wider approach and
focuses on the exchange of digital information.

ICT or Information Communications Technology..

it refers to all communication technologies, including the internet, wireless networks,

mobile phones, computers, software, middleware, video conferencing, social
networking, and other media applications and services that enable users to digitally
access, retrieve, store, share, and manipulate information.

IMPORTANCE OF IT/ICT
IT/ICT is important in our lives because...
It permeates all aspects of life, providing people with new, better, and faster ways to
communicate, network, seek assistance, gain access to information, and learn.
Information and communication technology has an enormous economic significance, in
addition to its presence everywhere.

IT/ICT is important in nursing because...

There are well-known advantages to information and communication technologies
(ICTs) used in the health sector. They can encourage patient-centered healthcare,
enhance the quality of care, and educate patients and health professionals.

The use of ICTs by nurses can have impacts in their practice.

IT/ICT in our everyday lives...

ICT has a great impact in our daily lives.
It can improve the quality of human life because it can be used as a means of learning
and education, as a means of mass communication to promote and promote practical
and important issues such as health and social issues.

Advantages
Advantages of ICT
1. Communication - Speed/Time - Money can be saved because moving information
around is much easier. It has become faster and more effective with the help of ICT.

2. Globalization - For flights and accommodation, video conferencing saves money. In

addition to bringing countries and citizens closer together, ICT has helped the world
economy to become a single interdependent system where either a company or a family
member can be contacted.

3. Cost effectiveness - Sending an email feels free (although it's not); it's better than
phone calls, without a doubt. ICT has also helped simplify corporate processes,
transforming organizations to make them cost-effective in an extraordinary way.

4. Education - Computers have provided educational opportunities not accessible to

previous generations along with their programs and the Internet.

5. Bridging the cultural gap - Greater access to technology has helped bridge the
cultural divide by allowing people from various backgrounds to engage and share views
and ideas with each other, thus raising awareness and minimizing bias.

Disadvantages
Disadvantages of ICT
1. Privacy - While information technology may have made communication faster,
simpler, and more convenient, privacy concerns have also been brought along. People
are now concerned about their private information being public knowledge, from mobile
phone signal interceptions to e-mail hacking.

2. Reliability of Information - Anyone can start a blog or post something on a website

with access to a computer and an internet connection, but just because something is on
the web doesn't mean it's accurate. The open source encyclopedia, Wikipedia, is a
prime example of this, even though it is not accepted as a trustworthy reference by
academic institutions as a good source of information.
