JAYPEE MEDICAL CENTRE (JMC)
SECTOR – 128, NOIDA
1. INTRODUCTION
The JAYPEE MEDICAL CENTRE (JMC) is a hospital building. This building has a planning and
structural orthogonal grid of 8.3 m x 8.3 m with variations at some places. The building has 2 blocks, for
different utilities, connected with a central lobby and lift cores. These blocks have eight storeys above ground
level and a common basement of two levels. There is a service floor between third and fourth floor level. The
floor heights vary from 3.6m to 4.8m. The total height of building is 32.8m above ground level and 8.1m
below ground level.
2. STRUCTURE
2.1 Seismic Separation Joints
The building will be treated as a single entity. Since the length of the building is more than 45 m,
temperature analysis will be done to consider the stresses induced due to the thermal expansion and shrinkage.
DESIGN PARAMETERS
All structural analysis, design and detailing shall be as per relevant BIS codes. All structural elements shall
conform to the relevant BIS codes and shall satisfy the functional requirements of the building.
List of some of the important design codes are as given below:
IS: 456 - Plain and reinforced concrete
IS: 800 - Code of practice for general construction in steel
IS: 806 - Code of practice for use of Steel tubes in general building construction.
IS: 875 - Part 1 - Code of practice for design loads (Dead load)
IS: 875 - Part 2 - Code of practice for design loads (Imposed load)
IS: 875 - Part 3 - Code of practice for design loads (Wind load)
IS: 875 - Part 5 - Code of practice for design loads (Special loads and load combination)
IS: 1161 - Steel Tubes for structural purpose.
IS: 1893 - Criteria for earthquake resisting design of structures.
IS: 4326 - Code of practice for earthquake resistant design and construction of buildings.
IS: 4923 - Hollow Steel Section for structural use.
IS: 2911 - Pile foundation design.
IS: 11384 - Code of practice for composite construction in structural steel and concrete.
IS: 13920 - Ductile detailing of reinforced concrete structures subjected to seismic forces.
SP – 16 - Design Aids for reinforced concrete to IS – 456.
SP – 34 - Hand-book on concrete reinforcement and detailing.

LOADING
a) DEAD LOAD (As per IS: 875-Part-1)
* Most of the internal walls (both 230mm thk. and 115mm thk.) are not sitting on the beams and as per
the direction given by the architect and the architect in charge of the client, the position of walls may
change, hence the wall load is taken as a distributed load (=total load of 230mm and 115mm walls
/area of floor) on the slab for the assessment of earth quake loads and the design of foundation and
columns.
* The beams will be designed for the maximum of the following (a) considering a full brick wall directly
sitting on the beam (b) considering wall load distributed over the slab.
* The slabs will be designed for the maximum of the following (a) considering a full brick wall sitting
on the slab along the span (b) considering a full brick wall sitting on the slab across the span. (c)
considering wall load distributed over the slab.
f) TEMPERATURE LOAD: -
Temperature Load:-
Minimum temperature during winter = 4oC
Maximum temperature during winter = 22oC
Average temperature during winter = 13oC
Temperature load of 22 / 2 = + 11oC will be applied on all intermediate floors as the effective modulus
of elasticity will be half of the instantaneous modulus of elasticity of concrete.
Shrinkage Load:-
We know that
L α t
L =αt
ε =αt
-4
1.0 X 10 = 1.0 x 10-5 x t (α = coefficient of thermal expansion of concrete = 1.0 X 10-5)
o
t = 10 C
Shrinkage load of 10 / 2 = 5oC will be applied on all floors as the effective modulus of elasticity will
be half of the instantaneous modulus of elasticity.
Stresses due to shrinkage are compressive in nature. Thus, this load will be applied with a (-ve) sign.
