Activity:

1. This activity will prove how globalized your home is. First go to your room and do
an inventory of everything you have in your possession. What do you find?
Organize your inventory into two types, first are the things that are made in the
Philippines and second, those that are from foreign brands. What are the other
things in your house which are made in the Philippines and other countries?
Write your observations why some products are made in our country and others
are made from other countries.

Filipino Brands Foreign Brands

Food Food
Jack and jill, Oreos, chocolate, (USA)
Kopiko, Piatos, Nova, Presto lays (THAILAND)
Etc…
Clothing Clothing

OXYGEN Saint Laurent (France)
Gap (USA)
Reitmans (Canada) etc.
Linens and appliances Linens and appliances
Uratex
Aikon JCP home (Pakistan)
Gentle bounce Egyptian Cotton™ brand (Egypt) etc.

The objects, clothes, food and furniture found in my bedroom are both
domestic and foreign produced here is an inventory of the brand names I CAN
find.
Looking into almost any house in the Philippines there’s a guarantee that you would see
products from numerous different countries. Even I don’t have to deliberately search for
those items, I can just gaze around me and be able to quickly point out things that are
made in a foreign country from the keyboard I’m typing on to the florescent light hanging
above me, we are able to have these things due to globalization.

It is no secret that Filipinos have a preference towards foreign product as I was doing
the room inventory, I’ve noticed that the majority of my possessions come from other
countries, although this isn’t surprising as I have foreign relatives who routinely send
“balikbayan boxes” or “padala”, but I did not base the above conclusion from my
experience alone as I have read articles that stated something similar, according to
Philippine Gateway (2020) “Filipinos have an affinity to imported products, especially
those that came from the U.S..” There implications as to why that may be the case, but
there are other reasons as to why we have domestic products as well as foreign. Firstly,
in this day and age there are very few countries able to produce every single item their
citizens could use or want, Philippines isn’t one of them, being a small and
underdeveloped country, we are simply lacking resources, materials and manpower.
Secondly, with having the ability to connect more with the world then, we are exposed to
many new things we may want to have due to advertisements, product placement etc.
in addition to getting those items now is as simple as opening an app and tapping the
screen a few times there is almost no limit to what you can buy from abroad. Lastly,
another thing that I know but only now reflected upon as I was doing the activity is how
the items brand/company origin does not line up with the country made in name. This is
because of neoliberalism, as many foreign countries choose to have materials bought
from and shipped, abiding by the rules of the World Trade Organization sometimes to
two or more countries (international trade) to make so that they be able to control/exploit
their workers to increase production usually those countries are in Asia as labor is low,
so they can cut costs afterwards it is shipped to the overseeing company to sell in their
country. Although we are not exempted from this exploitation we still benefit from and
use items that are produced in other countries, like China for example as it is cheaper.
Even if this unethical side to this, and it seems unlikely to be resolved in this immediate
time realistically we should still strive now for continuous improvement.
2. What is your understanding of the word “ Globalization”?

To me the concept of globalization can be summed up by the word “connection”.

Globalization is a never-ending process due to mankind’s inherent urge for
connection, and the betterment of themselves. Resulting to the interaction and
merging of people, businesses and governments from various nations, races,
and ethnicities, fueled by world wide trade and investments, enabled through
communication tools. The implications of which ranges from economic
development and prosperity, political systems to culture, human well-being and
the environment.

Activity:

1. Enumerate at least three most recent songs you have listened. Who are the
artists and from what countries?
This is a list of the songs I have recently listened to along with the artists names
as well as country of origin:
 Бухгалтер (Bukhgalter) Artist: Kombinaciya (Комбинация) (RUSSIA)
 Summer Salt - One Last Time (NORTH AMERICA)
 Ben&Ben - Di Ka Sayang (PHILIPPINES)

2. How did you access these music? Did you listen through YouTube, Spotify and
other channels?
As I’m not really the kind to listen to music often, all of my music come from one
place and that source is YouTube.
How do you view globalization? Is it an advantage or a disadvantage?

I view globalization as an advantage. There are disadvantages undeniably, but to an

ongoing unstoppable phenomenon we would just have to adapt and try to improve upon
those things, like better policies in construction and production for the sake of the
environment and in human wellbeing. But, thanks to globalization, people are easily
connected with each other creating job opportunities that boosts economies, giving
more awareness, promotion and coverage to human rights and contribution to overall
knowledge through innovation and information there are for sure many more
advantages. In conclusion Globalization benefits everyone in the long run.
