Substation Bus Configurations
• Cost, • Single Bus Single Breaker
Minimum
• Reliability requirements • Split Bus Single Breaker
• Operational flexibility • Main Bus and Transfer Bus
• Maintenance • Double Bus Double Breaker
• Importance of the substation • Double Bus Single Breaker
• Future expansion • Ring Bus
Maximum
• One and Half Breaker

3
Substation Bus Configurations
• Advantage
– Low cost
– Relaying and protection is simple
• Disadvantages
– Failure of bus or CB results in substation shutdown
– Entire substation needs shutdown for maintenance and
bus extension
– It can be used where loads can be interrupted or alternate
supply is available
– Often, bus is split into two parts and connected by a switch
Single BusSingle
Split Bus SingleBreaker
Breaker or breaker to improve the reliability

4
Substation Bus Configurations
• Advantages
Transfer Bus
– Low cost
– Any CB can be taken out for maintenance
– Reliability more than single bus scheme
• Disadvantages
– Requires one extra CB for bus tie
Main bus
– Entire substation results in shut down in case of failure
of any bus or any CB.
Main and – All the circuits connected to transfer bus results in
transfer bus outages when there is fault on any of the circuit

5
Substation Bus Configurations
• Advantages
– Operational flexibility and reliability due to two buses
– Any bus can be isolated for maintenance
– Circuits can be easily transferred from one bus to other
• Disadvantages
– One extra CB for bus tie
– Four switches per circuit leads higher space and
maintenance cost
– Higher exposure to bus fault
– Line CB failure takes all the circuit connected to the bus
Double Bus out of service
Single Breaker – Failure of tie CB takes entire substation out of service

6
Substation Bus Configurations
• Advantages
– Each line has two dedicated CBs
– Circuit can be connected to any bus
– Any line can be taken out of circuit for maintenance
– Very high reliability
– Higher operational flexibility
• Disadvantages
– Most expensive
Double Bus
Double Breaker

7
Substation Bus Configurations
• Advantages
– Higher flexibility and reliability
– Simple operation and no disconnect switch operation
– Any bus can be taken out for maintenance
– All circuit remains in service during any bus failure
– Bus side CB failure removes only one circuit
• Disadvantages
– Relaying and automatic reclosing are somewhat involved
– Expensive, however, cheaper than double bus and double
Breaker scheme
One and Half
Breaker scheme
8
Substation Bus Configurations
• Advantages
– One breaker per circuit
– Economical , while providing high level of
reliability and operational flexibility
– Any CB can be taken out for maintenance
Ring Bus – Switching is done by breakers
• Disadvantages
– Relaying is relatively complex
– Fault on one circuit during CB maintenance
ring gets separated into two parts
