Senior Year, 1 would like to point out the benefits of learning a language.
First, there is the obvious advantage of communicating in a foreign language when you are
traveling, but that is not the only thing. Languages can also help your career.
When you apply for a job, you are more likely to get an interview if you list another language
on your application.
Next, studies have shown that students who learn languages do better in math, reading,
and vocabulary tests, and they have better memories. So language learning not only
allows us to communicate, but also improves our abilities in other areas.
_J Finally, 1 am dueto set off on a trip to Spain after my tests, andas soon as 1

B Our job was to teach English and basic math to children of elementary
school age. There was a local school, but there was a teaching crisis
in the area, and so there weren't enough teachers. That's where we
could help. 1 also acted as a soccer coach ! 1 had worked on volunteer
projects before in my hometown of Portland, but that had only been
for a few hours a week. Here, we were teaching for five hours every
morning, and it was really challenging!
D lt's nearly a year now since I went to Ghana, but I still benefit from the
experience today. lt made me more confident and more determined to
make the most of the opportunities I have. 1 feel that we must have
made a difference to the children's lives, even if it was justa small
one, and I know that they made a big difference to mine. They are
my heroes ! lt was an awesome experience that l'd recommend to
