Gunjan Saxena - The Kargil Girl Movie Review:

Cast: Janhvi Kapoor, Pankaj Tripathi, Angad Bedi, Vineet Kumar

Director: Sharan Sharma

Rating: 3.5 stars (out of 5)

The story of the first Indian Air Force woman pilot who was part of the 1999 Kargil conflict is
ready-made movie material, and a great hook: who is Gunjan Saxena, and what made her want
to fly so bad that she braved concerted antagonism in a tough male-dominated field? The
Lucknow-born Saxena, played by Janhvi Kapoor, is sky-struck from an early age, fighting for
a window seat with her older brother (Angad Bedi) during a flight, pulling away from the
conventional route of good girls getting a degree-and-getting married, and being buoyed by a
supportive father (Pankaj Tripathi), in her determination to become a pilot.

In our country, the idea of equal opportunity is seen as a threat by those in positions of power.
Which is why there is a systemic effort to maintain the status quo. Gunjan Saxena, solely on
the strength of her convictions, chose to break it. “Pinjra tod,” her father, played by the great
Pankaj Tripathi, tells her in an excellent scene in the film’s final act, when Gunjan, having
nearly given up on her dreams of becoming a pilot, returns home. Tripathi, playing perhaps the
most tender character of his career — Gunjan’s dad reminded me of Kumud Mishra’s equally
virtuous character in Thappad — is the heart and soul of the film.

From an early age, Gunjan’s father, an army officer, was the only one who supported her dream
of becoming a pilot. Despite topping her class in school, she frets about telling her parents that
her future lies not in some man’s kitchen, but in the skies. The moment when she breaks the
news to her folks could almost be mistaken for her coming out as gay — there is gossip among
the relatives, her brother adopts the ‘log kya kahenge’ attitude, and Gunjan’s mother even
proposes visiting an astrologer for advice on how to ‘cure’ her.

Sharan Sharma, who makes a compelling directorial debut with this film, captures the
gender dynamics with honesty and poise. It’s rare for an Indian biographical film to
show people just the way they are. Sharma calls out the sexism faced by Gunjan in the
Armed Forces not to exploit her story but to begin a conversation. His gaze towards his
characters is realistic, yet, humane and heartfelt. While the film compels you to redefine
patriotism and battle patriarchy, at heart, it is a poignant ode to a father -daughter
relationship. Two people who never give up on each other. Their respective roles fit
Pankaj Tripathi and Janhvi like a glove. They convince you that there couldn’t have
been a better pair to essay these roles. Not only is she age appropriate for her role, her
eyes mirror Gunjan’s childlike exuberance as well as shades of sorrow and anger at
being conveniently side-lined by her sexist superior (Vineet Kumar Singh as the Wing
Commander). The actress is impeccable as Gunjan Saxena. Vineet and Angad Bedi get
one-dimensional characters with limited scope, yet, they aren’t forgettable .

Sharan Sharma structures the film almost like a superhero origin story. Gunjan suffers
hardships despite her obvious talents, but she develops her skills patiently, until she is called
upon to unleash her powers in battle. By writing Gunjan as someone whose first love isn’t
serving their country, but flying, Sharma offers a new perspective on uber-patriotic war movies.
This is a welcome change of pace, especially in India, where the benchmark for war films is
determined by JP Dutta’s filmography.
Khuda Haafiz movie review:

Cast: Vidyut Jammwal, Annu Kapoor, Aahana Kumra, Shiv Pandit,

Shivaleeka Oberoi

Director: Faruk Kabir

Rating: 3 Stars (out of 5)

For a common man, his world resides within the four walls of his homes and his heart
lies in his loved ones. He travels in crowded buses, keeps his finances in check and
works hard in the office, all to keep his family safe. But what if, one day, his acutely
balanced world comes crumbling down after one phone call. Forcing him to break out
of his comfort zone and find his inner superhero.

Director Faruk Kabir chose Vidyut Jammwal, a trained martial art expert, to play the role of
this common man cum superman in Khuda Hafiz. The film, which is inspired from a real-life
incident, begins with Sameer (Vidyut), who ties the knot with Nargis (Shivaleeka Oberoi) in
an arranged marriage. It's a no-brainer that Sameer is head over heels in love with Nargis and
the two software engineers quickly build a life together. Their world collapses when they lose
their jobs after the recession hits the country. Desperate, they find placements in a fictional
Middle-Eastern city called Noman. Khuda Haafiz, which is shot in Uzbekistan, sees many local
actors fill up the frame. Their presence provides an authencity to the film.

Nargis, who has never stepped out of her city Lucknow, gets placed first and decides to travel
alone. Sameer is doubtful but he has no choice. His worst fear comes to life when his wife goes
missing right after landing in the foreign country. The Lucknow boy follows, doing everything
in his power to find her.

Vidyut, who has established himself as a tough action figure right from the beginning of his
career, gives feelings and emotions precedence in Khuda Haafiz. Faruk also doesn't overstuff
his film with over-the-top action sequences. He makes use of Vidyut's martial arts skills but
without turning him into a larger-than-life figure. Our hero gets hurt, cries and shows his
vulnerable side to the audience without any qualms.

Apart from Vidyut, Annu Kapoor as a helpful taxi driver is a delight to watch. He adds the much-needed
warmth to the film. The plot of Khuda Haafiz - missing wife in a foreign land - sounds exciting on
paper. We have seen a similar plotline in Liam Neeson's 2008 film, Taken, where we saw Liam make
inroads in the underworld to find his missing daughter. Faruk Kabir's film, however, isn't as sharply
written as the Hollywood blockbuster. Right after quickly setting its premise, the film slows down, only
to gain pace in the end. The presence of Aahana Kumra and Shiv Panditt in supporting roles is of no
help either, especially because of their forced, bad accents.

Apart from these few faults, Khuda Haafiz makes for a good one-time watch. From action to drama,
the film has it all.

Kasautii Zindagii Kay 2 Review:

Ekta Kapoor's epic love saga Kasautii Zindagii Kay makes a re-entry into our lives after ten
years. Parth Samthaan and Erica Fernandes play the star-crossed lovers in the romantic drama.

Kasautii Zindagii Kay fans who've watched the original version were quite excited for the
reboot version so that they could draw comparisons between the two. However, we would like
to tell you that we weren't disappointed to say the least. The show is set in Kolkata and has the
iconic landmarks of the city like Victoria Memorial, Howrah Bridge, Dakshineshwar temple
and vintage trams in the backdrop. The grand sets, the ensemble cast and music brought back
so many memories.

Part Samthaan and Erica Fernandes beautifully fit into the shoes of Cezanne Khan and Shweta
Tiwari as punctual Anurag and carefree Prerna. The ensemble cast, which includes Uday
Tikekar, Kali Prasad Mukherjee, Shubhavi Choksey and Pooja Banerjee are well-suited for
their roles. The grandeur and magnificence of the show will make your jaw drop. They've tried
to retain the essence of Kolkata and bangaliana by showing things like Durga Puja, red-border
saris, big bindis and Howrah Bridge in its first episode. The class divide between the Basus
and the Sharmas is apparent as Anurag's mother and sister are laden with gold jewellery. But,
that doesn't lessen the sense of pride in Prerna's mother Veena. It was quite nostalgic drawing
similarities between the two shows. Music has the capability of time travel, and using the same
background and title score helped the viewers go back in time.

The new show is highly influenced by the old one, and the makers could have tried
something new instead of repeating the old scenes. To be honest, Kasautii is a new story.
The makers are hoping to rake in eyeballs by just naming their characters Anurag and
Prerna.
The Kapil Sharma Show review:

Kapil Sharma has returned once again to our television sets with The Kapil Sharma Show and
thankfully for him, it’s just as childishly stupid as we always remembered it to be. The new
season brings back the old cast of Kiku Sharda, Chandan Prabhakar and Sumona Chakraborthy.
New joinees include Bharti Singh and once upon a nemesis, Krushna Abhishek. The latest
episode of The Kapil Sharma Show kicks off with the beats of the same old jagrata-style live
band. Archana Puran Singh takes her usual seat, ready to regurgitate a gallon of laughter should
the host require her to. Luckily for her and us, the insufferable bits don’t last too long.

Kapil is still cracking the same old jokes about Kiku’s obesity and Chandan’s poverty and
Sumona is still the ugly one. However, he seems to have learnt a lesson or two from last time
and it is visible in how he treats Bharti’s character, calling her pretty and beautiful, something
no one expected. It’s something fresh even if it is still unable to wriggle out laughs from the
viewers. The harmless joke keep swelling into hearty laughter every time the singer repeats the
chorus.

Kapil’s observations about people in this audience and his quick comebacks have always been
his strong points. The best recourse for Kapil is to design the show as a celebrity talk show,
merely peppered with appearances from other cast members. And please, no more people in
drag for comedy’s sake.

Author Profile

Chetan Bhagat, who is known for his romance genre novels, has tried his hand at a murder
mystery and it will grip you instantly. Often his books are easily labelled as love stories. His
bestselling books are Five Point Someone, One night at the Call Center, 2 States and much
more.

The Story in Short

This section is about the gist of the book. The Story, in Short, may give you a reason to read a
book, and that is the whole aim of the publication. The book boasts of a fresh storyline and a
decent effort in terms of plot and plot twists. Mystery and entertainment also don’t come far
behind. The book is basically a crime mystery in the garb of a romantic drama. Surely, there is
a bit of both (romance and drama) but the suspense overpowers them in a big way.

Part 1: The Current Story of Keshav

Chetan Bhagat has taken a different path in this book. He himself got tired of love stories. This
book is a thriller love story. The main characters of the book are Keshav, Saurabh, and Zara.

Keshav is an IITian who works as a teacher in JEE tuition centre called ‘Chandan Classes’. He
hates his job and reaches out through LinkedIn, but fails to find a proper job. He is a part of an
orthodox family. His mother is a homemaker and his father is a part of the RSS, which is a
political party in India. As always, he has a love story with a colleague called Zara, who is
currently pursuing her Ph.D. in IIT. Zara is from a Kashmiri Muslim family and their love story
ends due to their families, who fight over religious issues. Let’s not get into that. If you are an
Indian and reading this, you would know the issues an inter-religion couple would face in the
country. Keshav couldn’t come out of the affair and keeps remembering Zara, who then loves
Raghav (Keshav’s classmate). Raghav happens to be an intelligent person with a geeky look.
Keshav often calls Zara begging her to come back to him, but she never agrees. Saurabh also
works in ‘Chandan’s Classes’. He is from NIT and is a friend of Keshav. He helps Keshav
forget his past love and focus on his future. Ever since then Keshav has been pining for her
love despite every practical advice against it.

What seems like an ordinary unsuccessful love story, turns into something different altogether
when one day, on the eve of her birthday, Zara messages Keshav out of the blue. Drunk, and
already in half his wits, he readily agrees to meet her by sneaking into her hostel room (room
no 105) in the dead of the night, just like he used to do years ago when they were still dating.

This one mistake changes his life forever. Unknowingly he does what he should never have
done. Now, he is caught in a whirlwind of events and it doesn’t seem that there is a way out.

The plot

What I absolutely loved in this book is its strong plot. If there is one thing that appears to have
taken a good amount of effort and thinking, it is the plot. There is a main plot which tells us
the story of Keshav and his one blunder. While manoeuvring the whirlwind that Keshav gets
himself into, Chetan Bhagat skilfully adds in a number of sub-plots.

The overall effect is pure entertainment. In very simple terms, there is never a dull moment in
the book. Not for one tiny second it loses its pace or assumes monotony. For this, I would
definitely like to congratulate the author.

Reasons to read it

It is not another Indian love story.

We travel with Keshav, who finds justice and also his career path at the end of the book.
The story is not too obvious like other Indian mystery books.
It is best enjoyed as a onetime read.

TRAVELOUGE

A trip to Mussoorie

After visiting the worth seeing places in Dehradun our next trip was for Mussoorie the queen
hill station located at about 6170 ft. above the sea level. It is about 35 Km from the heart of the
district HQ Dehradun. The culture, weather and beauty of Mussoorie are totally different and
unique from other hill stations. I have travelled to many other hill stations in India with my
friends and family, but when I visited Mussoorie for the first time last year, I found that
Mussoorie is the best out of them. I have heard people saying that Mussoorie is 'the Queen of
Hills' and I also recognized that this is totally true through my visit.
On my visit to this beautiful hill station I found a lot of adventure sports activities like river
crossing, valley crossing, rappelling, Rock Climbing, Sky Bridge, Sky Walk, bungee jumping
and white water rafting here.
We felt very close to nature here. All the recreational activities we did and refreshed us up from
the daily tiresome life. I will share a little information on some of the must watch places in
Mussoorie that you should visit in your trip.
Municipal Garden
This picnic spot has a beautiful garden and an artificial mini lake with boating facilities. It is
located at a distance of 4 km if you take the main road and is only 2 km on foot via the Convent
road.
Camel's Back Road
The lovely promenade starts from Kulri Bazar near Rink Hall and ends at Library Bazaar
making for a total distance of 3 kms. It is a popular road for walking or riding and is a grand
spot from which to view the sunset. When viewed from near the Mussoorie Public School the
spot resembles a camel's back.
Nag Devta Temple
An ancient temple situated about 6 kms from Mussoorie. It provides a charming view of Doon
Valley and Mussoorie.
Kempty Falls
Buses or taxis can be taken to the waterfall, 15 km from Mussoorie on the Yamnotri Road at
an altitude of 4500 feet. It has the distinction of being the largest and prettiest waterfall in the
valley and is surrounded by high mountains. The stream flowing through a valley falls over a
precipice and achieves its full intensity during the monsoons.
Dhanoulti
Located on Mussoorie - Tehri Road at a distance of 25 kms from Mussoorie, Dhanolti is ideal
for a quiet holiday. At a height of 2400 metres it nestles between oak and deodar forests. The
drive from Mussoorie is dotted with fruit orchards. A tourist bungalow is available. There is
also a Forest Rest House for which a permit can be obtained from Forest Officer at Mussoorie.
A few other hotels are also available for a comfortable stay.
Yamuna Bridge
About 27 Kms. from Mussoorie on Chakrata-Batkot road, this is an ideal spot for fishing.
Permits for fishing can be obtained from the Divisional Forest Officer.
The Best Shopping Places in Mussoorie
Mall Road
Mall Road is the main shopping hub in Mussoorie. Most of the hill station’s famous stores are
all located here. The shops here sell everything from electronics to consumer durables and even
everyday essentials. Apart from this, you can also get yourself woollen clothing, antiques and
shawls. Bargaining is common practice here, so if you got good negotiation skills, you might
get yourself a good deal on what you buy.
The Tibetan Market
At this market, you will find many shops and stalls run by local Tibetans. At these stores, you
can shop for a variety of winter clothes, shawls, Tibetan woodwork and prayer wheels. The
market is also famous for its footwear and woven carpets.
Kulri Bazaar
Yet another popular shopping market in Mussoorie, the Kulri Bazaar is always crowded till 10
pm. Located at the south end of the Mall Road, there are many shops selling clothing items and
a few restaurants.
Accommodation
A variety of luxury and low budget accommodation is available to suit every pocket.
The main tourist spot in Mussoorie that you will enjoy a lot is the Mussoorie Adventure Park.
We had great fun there, enjoyed almost all the adventure sports namely Sky Ride- Superman
Zip Line, valley crossing, Rock climbing, Rappelling, Zip swing, Rope course, Trekking
Camping etc. And yes, I can tell you that it was where I had the best Maggi EVER. Just so
yummmmmy!! There is something about mountains and Maggi.
God's own country- Kerala

Kerala is one of the most beautiful places in India. It is famous for its best variety of spices,
herbs and Ayurveda treatment. Located in the lap of Sahayadri hills and adjoining Malabar
Coast, Kerala offers some breath-taking tourist attractions. Kerala as they say is truly the God's
Own Country. This land just gives you the feeling that God must have had a green paint with
Him when He decided to create this land called Kerala. It is rich in its glorious heritage, the
best spices in the world and the 100% literacy rate in the state which is evident from the people
you come across in the course of your stay here.
Best Season to Visit Kerala:
Although there are places like Munnar which are best enjoyed in summers, but the best season
to visit Kerala is winter i.e. the months of November-March. The land of Kerala is simply green
throughout the year. As far as your eyes can see you are treated with its green paddy fields and
coconut trees standing tall. Also if you want to enjoy the famous snake boat races of Kerala,
then the month of August-September are ideal to visit this place.
Alleppey
Alleppey or Alappuzha is best known for the world renowned backwaters of Kerala. The
backwaters are a network of brackish canals, rivers and lakes that weave through half of the
state of Kerala. One can cruise down the backwaters while enjoying the unique feel of the
“Kettuvallams” or house boats which provide amenities including a taste of typical Kerala
cuisine.
Kochi
Kochi is the cultural and economic capitals of Kerala. It’s a hub of tourist activity and attracts
visitors from all over the world. From Chinese fishing nets to exotic spice cultivations, there’s
a lot to feast your eyes upon in Kochi.
Munnar
Munnar is considered one of the most beautiful tourist places in Kerala. Situated on the Western
Ghats, Munnar is evidently one of the highest producers of tea on the Indian subcontinent. The
view of undulating hills as the touch the clouds in Munnar rejuvenates your mind and soul.
Wayanad
One of the prime hill stations in the south, Wayanad boasts of production of tea, coffee,
cardamom, pepper and other spices. The region is populated with many natural marvels such
as waterfalls, caves, lakes and dams which you are bound to enjoy the cool weather of
Wayanad.
Kozhikode
Much like Trivandrum, Kozhikode has been a habitat for multiple dynasties which have left
their imprint on the city. Perhaps that is why Kozhikode is dubbed as the ‘City of Sculptures’.
Kozhikode is also considered as the ‘City of Spices’ as it a major trading port of eastern spices.
The sweet-meat street is a popular tourist hub and is a centre of marketing for many products
that are locally produced in the region.
Best time to visit: September to May
Nearest airport: Karipur International Airport in Calicut is just 28 km away.
Nearest railway station: Kozhikode Railway Station is well within the city limits.
