Field Report
Feasibility Study, Detailed Engineering Survey, Soil Investigation, Hydrological Study and Design of Bridges:
Contract No: BB-1123-DSD-076/77-14

CHAPTER –I
INTRODUCTION
1.1 GENERAL

The field report has been prepared in accordance with the agreement made on 2078/02/14 between
Government of Nepal, Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transportation, Department of
Roads, Bridge Branch, Chakupat, Lalitpur and Sakhuwa Engineering Consultancy Pvt. Ltd. For
Feasibility study, Detailed Engineering Survey, Soil Investigation, Hydrological Study and Detailed
Design of Bridges, Contract No.: BB-1123-DSD-076/077-14.

The report describes the design concepts and short descriptions relating to the proposed structure and its
major components e.g. superstructure, pier, foundations, river training/bank protection structures,
approach road etc. It includes tentative location of proposed foundations and arrangement of bridge
components along with comparison between the possible alternatives types.

1.2 OBJECTIVE OF THE WORK

 To assess feasibility of the proposed bridge and find best bridge site;
 To carry out the detailed engineering survey including sub-soil exploration to acquire bridge
design parameters and predict construction difficulties;
 To carry out the detailed engineering design and prepare engineering drawings of proposed
bridge works and prepare detailed cost estimate(s).

1.3 Purpose of Project

In this regard the purpose of the report is to describe and report the overall condition of the River and
existing Structures. Bridges so that safe facility for the public could be provided. It also suggests on
maintaining and improving the existing condition of the bridge by correcting structural and functional
deficiencies associated with the bridge. The report will address the issues, problems identified and
inspected in the field visit.

1.4 SCOPE OF THE WORK

 Identification/preparation of location map

A desk study should be carried out by collecting all data as location of the bridge site(s) and
bridge code No. for SRN Bridge which provided by bridge branch, maps and information
relevant to bridge design etc. Based on this inception report is prepared.
 Site description
As per TOR, At least three alternatives bridge sites shall be recommended for best site based on
geology/ geo-morphology of the river banks, crossing location with respect to the existing road
alignment, bridge length, environment and social consideration. Site of bridge has been selected
as per IRC 5-2015 (Clause 104.1). Formal approval of bridge alignment has been obtained from
Bridge Branch during presentation and inception.

Field Report
Feasibility Study, Detailed Engineering Survey, Soil Investigation, Hydrological Study and Design of Bridges:
Contract No: BB-1123-DSD-076/77-14

 Detailed Hydrological Study

Generally, Hydrological data include collection of history of flood discharge, maximum HFL,
maximum velocity of flood flow, river flow characteristics, rainfall intensity and catchment area.
Hydrological Data has been collected as per guidelines of IRC: 5- 2015 (clause 106).

 Detailed Geotechnical Study

With the tentative arrangement of span finalized in office with DOR or Bridge Branch, the
borehole location for collection sample has been decided and further geotechnical study will be
done.

 Detailed Design of bridge / Quantity and Cost Estimate

Based on the collected data and information and results of the discussions mentioned above,
design the bridge as per the standard codes of practice, norms and guidelines will be done. As per
TOR, the design philosophy of limit-state method will be adopted for design of bridges. Updated
editions of relevant codes and special provisions of IRC, IS and Nepal Bridge standard 2067 will
be followed. However, other codes not mentioned in the list will be followed if necessary.

Field Visit & Methodology
2.1 GENERAL

Secondary data in the form of relevant past reports, maps were collected and reviewed which includes
SRN Map, topographical Map, District Map, Regional Map, geological of the region, seismic maps and
Google Map of the project area. All other relevant information regarding the bridge site area were
collected and studied. Technical feasible bridge locations were marked on Topographical maps of
1:50000/25000 for field visit and selection of bridge site. Consultation with Bridge Branch was made
prior to the field visit to identify the project area.

2.2 FIELD VISIT

Consultant team comprises Project coordinator, Senior Civil Engineer, Senior surveyor and other relevant
support staff has made field visit during 2078-03-20 to 2078-03-25, all the Identified locations been
discussed with local people and stake holders available at the project area and best suitable bridge site
was identified and bridge alignment was selected. The main tasks carried out by the consultant team
during field visit are
 Public Consultation, Interaction with stakeholder, officials to identify the project area, Selection
of best bridge site with social, economic, environmental justification along the route and
walkover survey and visual inspection was carried out
 Selection of bridge alignment and record coordinate using GPS, Cross section of selected axis
using Auto Level was taken along with Preparation of freehand Plan of the bridge site, Access
the condition of approach road and collect information on general description of the alignment.
 Conduct Preliminary geological & geomorphologic Investigation which includes, study the
topography, nature and structure of the surface soil, nature and structure of local as well as
regional geology related to the river, its catchments area of bridge sites and Visual justification of
soil strata and collection of soil sample to determine the basic parameter of top soil
 Conduct Preliminary Hydrological Investigation which includes Visit and Collect information
required for river control, design, construction and maintenance of the bridge, general slope of
the catchment in both sides of the river, Bed slope of the river, Velocity and depth of flow,
Shifting of the river in the past at proposed bridge site and in its vicinity, Vegetation,
cultivation etc. of the catchments, Existence of reservoir's, Lakes etc. in the catchments, Existing
bridge or other hydraulic structures across the river in the vicinity of the proposed bridge site
with their details as much as possible.
 Conduct Preliminary Environmental Investigation which includes assessment of risk at critical
stretches along the approach road alignment and bridge site.
 Preliminary Investigation of available construction materials on sites

CHAPTER -III
Conclusion
3.1 General

The desk study of the proposed bridges was conducted and field visit was conducted by design team
members. Selection of bridge site and bridge alignment was carried out in consultation with local people
and stake holders at project area. During field visit preliminary hydrological survey, preliminary
geotechnical survey and preliminary topographical survey was carried out for planning of bridge.
Walkover survey to access the site condition was carried out and the preliminary information on soil
type, river catchments etc ware collected.

Based on the desk study and data information collected during field visit; hydrology, general geology
was conducted to established the field report. It is expected to get early approval of Field work to
schedule the soil exploration as well as to complete the assignment on time.

This report is submitted to the Bridge Project, Department of Roads for perusal and issue a go ahead
letter to the Consultant to take up detail engineering survey, soil investigation and detailed design of the
bridges, at the earliest so that the contract is completed within stipulated time.
