CH 6: ANIMAL CLASSIFICATION
Q.1 Write the characteristics of the following animals with the help of
classification chart
1. Rohu
Ans: Classification:
Kingdom: Animalia
Subkingdom: Chordata
Phylum: Chordata
Sub- Phylum: Vertebrata
Class: Pisces
Characteristics:
1. The body is well adapted for aquatic mode of life.
2.Body is streamlined shaped to minimize the water resistance.
3. Exoskeleton is of scales.
4. Respiration with the help of gills.
5. There are paired fins and unpaired fins for swimming. Tail fin or caudal fin is
useful as a steering organ during swimming.
2. Penguin
Ans: Classification:
Kingdom: Animalia
Subkingdom: Chordata
Phylum: Chordata
Sub-phylum: Vertebrata
Class: Aves
Characteristics:
1. Penguin is a flightless bird inhabiting cold regions.
2. Exoskeleton is of feathers.
3. It is warm blooded bird.
4. Forelimbs are modified into wings.
5. Hindlimbs are modified to swim and wade through water.
3. Frog 4. Lizard 5. Elephant (homework -Do it yourself)
Q2. Give scientific classification of shark upto class.
Ans: Classification chart of shark:
Kingdom: Animalia
Subkingdom: Chordata
Phylum: Chordata
Sub-Phylum: Vertebrata
Class: Pisces
Q3. Distinguish between butterfly and bat
Ans:
Butterfly Bat
1.Butterfly is a non-chordate 1. Bat is a chordate.
2. It is included in class insecta of phylum 2. It is included in class mammalia of
Arthropoda. subphylum vertebrata.
3.Butterfly is oviparous (egg laying) 3. Bat is viviparous (Gives birth to young
ones)
4. Butterfly is diurnal (Active during the 4. Bats are nocturnal mammals (Active
day) during the night)
5. Butterfly has three pairs of legs and two 5. Bats have a pair of legs and a pair of
pairs of chitinous wings. bony wings called patagium.

Q4. Give scientific reasons:

1. Though tortoise lives on land as well as in water, it cannot be included in class
Amphibia.
Ans: 1. Amphibians can take oxygen dissolved in water through its skin and on land it
breathes with the help of lungs.
2. Tortoise cannot take the oxygen dissolved in water and breathes only with the help of
lungs. In water it puts its nasal opening out of water to breathe in air.
3.Tortoise has an exoskeleton which is lacking in amphibians.
Due to these reasons, Tortoise cannot be included in class Amphibia.
2. All vertebrates are chordates but all chordates are not vertebrates.
Ans: 1. All chordates possess notochord in some period of their life.
2. All vertebrates also have notochord during embryonic development, which is later
replaced by vertebral column.
3.Therefore all vertebrates are chordates.
4.Some chordates like Urochordata and Cephalochordata shows the presence of notochord
but it does not develop into vertebral column in them, in their later life.
3. Body temperature of reptiles is not constant.
Ans: 1. Reptiles are cold blooded animals or poikilotherms.
2.The body temperature of cold-blooded animals changes with the surrounding
temperatures.
3.Reptiles can be seen in different habitat having different temperatures.
4. In order to adapt to different situations, the body temperature of reptiles differ.
Hence, body temperature of reptiles is not constant.
Q5. Identify me:
a. Though Iam multicellular, there are no tissues in my body. What is the name of my
phylum.
Ans : I belong to phylum Porifera.
b. I live in your small intestine. Pseudocoelom is present in my thread like body.
Which phylum will you include me?
Ans: The animal belongs to phylum Aschelminthes.
c. My body is radially symmetrical. Water vascular system is present in my body.
Iam referred to as a fish though Iam not. What is my name?
Ans: My name is Starfish.
