END OF MODULE ASSESSMENT: 4.3.2 Modal Split – Logit Model

Determine the proportion of travelers by each of two modes (private auto and mass transit)
using the logit model and given the following information:
Utility function: Uk = Ak − 0.05Ta − 0.04Tw − 0.03Tr − 0.014C
Parameter Private Auto Mass Transit
Ta = access time (min.) 5 10
Tw = waiting time (min.) 0 15
Tr = riding time (min.) 25 40
C = cost (cents) 150 100
Ak = calibration constant -0.01 -0.07

Solution:
Using the provided utility functions and the logit model.

𝑈𝐴 = −0.01 − 0.05(5) − 0.04(0) − 0.03(25) − 0.014(150)

𝑈𝐴 = −3.11

𝑈𝑇 = −0.07 − 0.05(10) − 0.04(15) − 0.03(40) − 0.014(100)

𝑈𝑇 = −3.77

𝑒𝑈𝐴
𝑃(𝐴) =
𝑒𝑈𝐴 + 𝑒𝑈𝑇
𝑒−3.11
𝑃(𝐴) =
𝑒−3.11 + 𝑒−3.77
𝑃(𝐴) = 0.6592603885 𝑜𝑟
P(A) = 65.93%

𝑃(𝑇) = 1 − 0.6592603885

𝑃(𝑇) = 0.3407396115 𝑜𝑟
P(T) = 34.07%

The percentage of passengers travelling by auto is 65.93% while the percent of passengers utilizing
transit to travel is 34.07%.
