Addition
 Numbers can be added in any
order. Their sum remains the same.
 Example: 1254 + 2317 = 3571
 Also, 2317 + 1254 = 3571
Subtraction
 The order of the numbers cannot
be changed.
 Example: 9584 – 2953 = 6631.
 But, 2953 – 9584 ≠ 6631
Property 2
Addition
 When 1 is added to a number, the
sum is its successor.
 Example: 5022 + 1 = 5023
Subtraction
 When 1 is subtracted from a
number, the difference is its
predecessor.
 Example: 8974 – 1 = 8973
Property 3
Addition
 When 0 is added to a number, the
sum is the number itself.
 Example: 3629 + 0 = 3629
Subtraction
 When 0 is subtracted from a
number, the difference is the
number itself.
 Example: 4025 – 0 = 4025
 When a number is subtracted
from itself, the difference is always
0.
 Example: 7342 – 7342 = 0
