What is Leadership?
Leadership is a process of social influence, which maximizes the efforts of others,
towards the achievement of a goal.
 Leadership stems from social influence, not authority or power
 Leadership requires others, and that implies they don’t need to be “direct
reports”
 No mention of personality traits, attributes, or even a title; there are many
styles, many paths, to effective leadership
 It includes a goal, not influence with no intended outcome

Values-Based Leadership
• Leaders will make better choices feeling more comfortable to act upon them

• Leaders are likely to build better, more trusting, less stressful relationships with
followers

• Leaders are more likely to feel aligned with their 'authentic self'

A person's values are at the core of their sense of identity. So by definition, authentic
leaders will always act from their highest values.

DIGITAL LITERACY
What is Digital Literacy?
The incredible advances in technology have changed the way people communicate,
interact and work, but that’s not all. Technology has also altered the way children learn.
Differences between Traditional Literacy and Digital Literacy
When you think of traditional literacy, reading and writing come to mind. Learning
phonics, sight words and eventually, reading literature.
When reinforcing literacy skills, conventional teaching methods involve:
 Textbooks
 Workbooks
 Written tests
 Recitation
Digital literacy teaching methods expand on print literacy with the following tools:
 Cloud computing
 Courseware
 Multimedia slides
 Game-based learning
 Educational video
 Audio learning
 Digital production
 Interacting on digital devices
 Combining virtual and physical worlds

universities all over the country that offer ECE and IT courses.
Under SWEEP, partner schools have benefitted from:
 Technology trainings;
 Last mile scholarships for deserving students taking up tech courses in partner State
schools;
 Access to the country’s first MOOCs offered by the UP Open University in partnership
with Smart;

What is a Makerspace?
"A makerspace is a destination where students-sometimes alongside staff, parents, and
mentors-can create, problem solve, and develop skills, talents, thinking, and mental rigor."
What's is the Maker Education Movement?
The Maker Movement in Education: Designing, Creating, and Learning Across Contexts

The process of making useful objects was an everyday activity in both schools and homes throughout
the twentieth century. The learning that occurs through the experience of making and the learning that
occurs through instruction in new media share an unexpected pedagogical kinship. Similarly, the
phenomenon that some have termed the "maker movement," which describes the wave of interest in
constructing and sharing personal inventions and creative artifacts, reconfigures the learner as a
producer rather than a consumer.

The Philosophy of Educational Makerspaces

It is the application of constructivist learning principles to a hands-on learning environment. Education is

a branch of constructivist philosophy that views learning as a highly personal endeavor requiring the
student, rather than the teacher, to initiate the learning process.

The Maker Movement Connects to the Classroom

According to Gertrude Ivory, associate superintendent for curriculum and instruction, "We renovated
our science lab at the middle school, and we are renovating an atrium space.

What Does a Makerspace Look Like?

- Makerspaces provide materials and resources to foster learning through inquiry.

Things to Consider When Building Your Own Makerspace

You do not have to be a techie to start a makerspace in your classroom, school, or library. This
is an opportunity for you to learn through inquiry as well.
Start small by stocking your makerspace with low tech arts and crafts items: construction paper,
paper plates, cups, pipe cleaners, shoe boxes, yarn, etc.
Don't be too Proud to Beg--ask for donations--old electronics, paper towel rolls, scrap wood or
fabrics, etc. Set-up a station in the front office of the school or ask parents for donations during
your welcome letter at the beginning of the school year. Remember to continue to ask for
donations through out the year.
Before purchasing big ticket items like 3D printers, visit neighboring schools, libraries, or
universities that have 3D printers to see it in action. What's the learning curve for that type of
printer? How user friendly is the software? How helpful is the support of the company? Do
thorough research before you purchase, also look into grants that may be available to obtain 3D
printers for educational purposes.
Consider partnering with your school librarian to design and purchase materials for a
makerspace. Sometimes the media center has more funds available than individual
departments on campus.
