Suitability / general information 1

The German version of these operating instructions are the „original operating instruc-
tions“.
Versions in any other language are a „translation of the original instructions“.

Aerzener GQ positive displacement machines are suitable for the oil-free conveying
and compression or almost all industrial gases and gas mixtures in a very wide range

ENGLISH
of areas in industry.
The GQ positive displacement blowers are suitable for continuous liquid injection for
gas cooling or for cleaning the conveying chamber.
The technical performance limits must be observed if perfect operation of the equip-
ment is to be ensured in the long term.
The performance limits stated in the order confirmation apply.
Attention is to be paid to the installation altitude and ambient pressure!

Failure to observe the technical performance limits or the safety information will absolve
Aerzener Maschinenfabrik of its warranty obligations and its liability to pay damages or
compensation as a result of any consequential damage. The same applies to defects
that can be traced back to recommended inspections not being performed correctly
or on time.

The vibration behaviour of positive displacement blowers with mounted couplings is

largely determined by the balance quality of the pistons as well as the balance of the
driving elements.
At Aerzener Maschinenfabrik, the piston drive shafts are balanced using the „half-key
balancing“ technique.
The couplings must be used in accordance with the requirements of balancing type
„H“.

The silencer and the process-side pipe fittings and pipes are designed in accordance
with the warranty data.
Different operating cases, e.g. in case of nitrogen operation on initial start or nitrogen
operation after extended standstill, are allowed for a maximum operating time of 2-3
hours.
If this operating period is exceeded, the machine may suffer degradation, e.g. increased
radiated noise, increased vibration, damage etc.

The maintenance intervals according to these operating instructions must be followed

and implemented properly. Complying with the maintenance specifications will ensure
that the machine retains its value and will also promote operational reliability.

Note:
For the correct operation of the GQ positive displacement machine please also refer
to the complete documentation, incl. the information on the accessories and from
suppliers.
The following Aerzener documents supplement these operating instructions and are
to
be observed:
• Function description, contains important details for the order-related usage / op-
eration.
• Instrument list, contains all important settings and operating data.
• Schematic diagram.
• Logic diagram, if applicable.

2 Construction, function
GQ blower stage:
The blower stage is supplied as a fully assembled unit.
The following additional work must be carried out:
• Correct installation/assembly in the relevant system.
• Connect the conveying ducts.
• Connect pipes for the liquid injection.
• All pipes are to be supported.
ENGLISH

• Ensure supply of lubricating oil. Connect oil supply.

• Connect flush gas pipes and condensate pipes.
• Fill oil system with lubricating oil.
• Install driving elements, ensuring that safety devices are in place!
• Fit vibration monitoring and connect.
• Connect protection devices, sensors for the starting protection.
• Install any special accessories which have been supplied separately.

Motor connection:
Electrical installation of the drive motor must only be carried out by an authorised
electrician.
Connect the motor and control voltage to a stable common network to ensure that the
power contactor is no longer latched if the power supply fails. Voltage fluctuations and
voltage dips must be avoided.
Alternative: An electronic monitoring relay must be installed in parallel to the drive mo-
tor so that the power contactor is no longer latched in the event of a power failure.
A restart must only be possible once the machine has come to a stop.

Prerequisites for operating positive displacement machines with asynchronous electric

motors on a 3-phase AC supply network:
The machine should only be used on stable three-phase supply networks.
The voltage and frequency limits must be observed. These are specified in EN 60034-
1.
Voltage fluctuations / dips beyond the tolerance zone can seriously damage all the
elements that make up the drive system, e.g. couplings, shafts, gear wheels, etc. .
If excessive voltage fluctuations arise in the system,
Aerzener Maschinenfabrik recommends the following measures in order to prevent the
blower, compressor or motor from sustaining damage:
- Use a suitable contactor that shuts down the motor if the operating data are outside
the limits allowed and that securely prevents automatic re-starting. Also comply with
EN 60034-1 and EN 60 204-1 in this respect.

Unit / system:
The blower stage must be installed/assembled in a system correctly so that it is safe
to operate.
There must be no forces or moments acting on the flange that could distort the blower
housing.
The assembly/installation must be guaranteed to be resistant to distortion.
The blower stage must be installed flat (without any inclines).
The magnitude of any misalignment affects operation safety.
We recommend that you install a pressure valve in the duct on the discharge side to
protect the blower against overload. No shut-off valves must be installed between the
pressure valve and blower stage.
Starting strainer:
A starting strainer is to be used to ensure the blower stage operated reliably.
The degree of contamination or the specifications in the maintenance schedule deter-
mines when the starting strainer must be cleaned or replaced.

10 G4-070 A EN
Translation of the original instructions
Mode of operation: 2
Aerzener GQ positive displacement blowers are dual-shaft positive displacement
machines with pistons which rotate evenly in opposite directions. Timing gear wheels
ensure that the rotary pistons run contact-free. The direction of rotation, in conjunc-
tion with the cylinder, determines the conveying direction of the blower, which means
there is an intake-side and discharge-side flange. During operation, the medium to
be conveyed flows through the intake flange into the housing. From there, it is forced
through the conveying chambers (consisting of the pistons and the blower cylinder) to
the discharge side.

ENGLISH
The drive shaft / auxiliary shaft and the conveying chamber (cylinder and side plates)
is sealed from the oil chambers (housing cover and gear case) using different seals
depending on the blower design.
The lubricating oil must be supplied by a separate oil supply unit incl. accessories, e.g.
oil filter, cooling etc.
This pressurised oil lubrication supplies the necessary points on the blower.

If the oil level in the blower is too high, oil can penetrate into the conveying chamber in
an uncontrolled manner. Attention is to be paid to oil return from the blower to the oil
system without a build-up of oil!

The blower is driven using a gearbox. An oil supply unit incl. accessories, e.g. oil
cooler, oil filter etc. is also required for the gearbox.

Oil heaters may be fitted to both oil supply systems. These heaters heat up the lu-
bricating oil from a pre-defined temperature and switch off again on reaching the oil
operating temperature set.

Compression heat arises during the compression process. Some of the heat is dissi-
pated via the outer surfaces of the blower and conveying duct into the ambient air.
Outer surfaces and conveying ducts reach temperatures that can cause burns on
exposed skin.

9.3 Lubricating oil regulations for GQ positive displacement
blowers
Additives and viscosity class are the defining factors in selecting types of lubricating
oil.
The following oils, which are of the correct viscosity and contain appropriate additives,
must be used in accordance with the relevant operating conditions.
ENGLISH

Only CLP oils which contain the constituents according to DIN 51517-3 for improving
corrosion protection and resistance to aging and for reducing wear in mixed friction
areas are allowed for the above Aerzener GQ-blower.

NOTE: Using lubricating oils which do not meet

the quality requirements above will invalidate
our guarantee.
Every oil manufacturer or supplier is reponsible
for the quality of his product without exception.

The operator is responsible for the technical suitability of the lubricant when using a
different viscosity or a viscosity other than that of the recommended lubricating oil.
To minimise the risk in this case, we recommend using a CLP oil of the specified qual-
ity, which should be confirmed by the oil manufacturer.

The purity of the oil affects the reliability and service life of the oil and therefore the
reliability of the blower.
You must therefore always ensure that the lubricating oil in the blower is clean and of
the appropriate viscosity. We recommend carrying out a regular lubricating oil analy-
sis.

When changing the oil, the residues in the blower must be kept to a minimum. The
used oil must be replaced completely.

Different types of lubricating oils and oils from different manufacturers must not be
mixed.

CAUTION!Under no circumstances must the lubricating oils be mixed with other sub-
stances.
Flushing with paraffin oil or other solvents is not
permitted, since residues will always remain in the oil chamber
and will have a detrimental effect on the performance characteristics
of the lubricating oil.

Changing the lubricant on the drive shaft 9.5
> Only for a gas-tight version of the drive shaft <

The lubricant change on a gas-tight drive shaft is undertaken by re-lubricating the

drive shaft.

• Lubricating grease sealing is used for sealing the shaft.

• On a version with grease cup, the quantity of grease stated below is to be pressed
in as per the interval information in the maintenance schedule.

ENGLISH
• Please note!
The lubricating grease is to be pressed in / changed a few operating hours prior to
the lubricating oil change. The used, excess grease enters the oil chamber for the
blower and can therefore be drained with the lubricating oil.
• After pressing in the grease, the grease cap cover is to be unscrewed one turn.
The grease pressed in can then expand when heated. Please take note of this
turn on repressing and include in the calculation of the necessary turns!

Lubricating grease specification

• On the usage of the lubricating oils as per the Aerzener lubricating oil specifica-
tion,
lubricating grease KHC-2P-30 is used.

Filling in the factory: KLÜBER PETAMO GHY 133 N

• A mixture of different greases is to be avoided.

• Re-lubrication is only allowed with the same grease.
• If these greases are not available, the grease is to be completely removed and
replaced with other greases as per KHC-2P-30 or MPG2K-40.
• Compatibility with the seals is to be ensured!

9.6 Changing the lubricant

• Filling with oil

• For first commissioning the lubricating oil supply system for the blower must be
filled with lubricating oil per the Aerzener specification and the gearbox and the
gearbox oil system filled with lubricating oil as per the gearbox manufacturer
specification.
• The vent for the gearbox oil chamber is to be fitted and secured on initial filling.
ENGLISH

• The gearbox is delivered with a preserving oil. This oil is to be drained prior to
filling with the operating oil and is to be disposed of correctly.

• In addition to this information, refer to the related supplier documentation.

This documentation contains detailed information, e.g., on the positions of the
lubricating oil filler, the lubricating oil level, the lubricating oil drain, the oil filter, the
cooling connections etc.

• On filling with oil it is to be ensured the drain valves are closed / firmly seated.
• Open oil fillers.
• The specified oil quantity required is to be added according to the oil level
indicator. Correct oil level = observe max. and min. marks on the sight glass and
on the oil system drawing.
• The blower oil supply system is equipped with a level switch. This switch is used
for protection if the oil level drops.
• The lubricating oil is to be added using a suitable funnel.
An oil filling temperature of min. 20°C is recommended.
• The oil level must be checked after the first 3 and 25 operating hours and then at
weekly intervals, and adjusted if necessary.
• Fill main oil lines with lubricating oil prior to first commissioning if possible.
• After filling with oil for the first time, the oil level may drop after operation for a
short time, as all components such as pipes, filters etc. have filled with lubricating
oil. If necessary, the lubricating oil level is to be corrected.

9.7 Drive / couplings
• Before installing the driving elements, clean the shaft journals to remove the pre-
serving oil.
• Gently break off (debur) any sharp edges on the drive shaft and the coupling.
• Push the coupling onto the shaft journal using a fixture.
• The fixture, threaded rod ... must be screwed into the metric tapped centre hole on
the drive shaft.
• The driving elements mustNOT be driven onto the shaft journal with a hammer.
ENGLISH

This would risk damaging the blower bearings.

• Following assembly and alignment, the coupling half must be secured to prevent
axial displacement.
• At Aerzener Maschinenfabrik, the piston drive shafts are balanced using the „half-
key balancing“ technique. The couplings must be used in accordance with the
requirements of balancing type „H“.

Drive coupling/alignment notes 9.7
Whenever work is carried out on the drive coupling, the machine must be taken out of
operation and correctly isolated from the mains supply.
The machine must be prevented from starting up/being operated.
Caution: The coupling is potentially dangerous and can sever and/or crush body
parts.

Changing the coupling elements

ENGLISH
Driving element replacement/service life depends on the unit version and on the oper-
ating conditions. Please refer to the information provided by the unit manufacturer.

Coupling alignment
Use dial gauges/hairline squares for alignment purposes.
The life of the driving elements will be affected in accordance with the extent of any
misalignment.
Use dial gauges/hairline squares to check the axial and radial run-out.
The coupling must be pushed onto the driving shaft in the correct way so that it pro-
vides full bearing support.

Refer to the functional description for the necessary alignment data. The sup-
plier documentation must be observed!

9.8 Mechanical seal GLRD (sealing to the conveying chamber)
• The shaft is sealed in relation to the conveying chamber using mechanical seals
specially developed for this machine.
• Lubricating oil is applied to these mechanical seals for sealing.
• During this process a certain amount of lubricating oil escapes.

• The leakage of sealing oil can increase as a function of the operating time!
If the amount of sealing oil exceeds 25 litres per day and blower, the mechanical
ENGLISH

seals must be removed, checked, and if necessary replaced.

• The mechanical seals are only allowed to be replaced by trained specialist per-
sonnel.
For detailed instructions on the replacement of the mechanical seal there is a
separate description.
• The complete component must be replaced. The seal removed is to be sent to
Aerzener Maschinenfabrik for inspection as a complete unit, not disassembled.

• The amount of oil leaking from the meAchanical seal is to be checked daily in ap-
proximately constant operating conditions.
Starting and stopping can briefly increase the leakage rate.
• The amount of oil leakage is to be logged. For this reason permanent drainage to
a waste oil collection pipe is not recommended.
• The oil that has leaked is to be drained without any build-up and properly col-
lected.
Caution! Substance hazardous for the environment.
• The leakage rate for a mechanical seal is dependent, among other issues, on:
- The discharge pressure - The oil viscosity
- The temperature - The speed - The size of the seal
- ...

10.1 Accessories

Oil supply system for GQ positive displacement blowers

Depending on the blower type and the version, the bearings and the gear wheels are
lubricated using a separate oil supply unit.
All the necessary parts for the pressurised oil lubrication are compactly combined in
this unit.
The return lines are to be laid with a downward slope in the direction of the oil unit
ENGLISH

so that the lubricating oil can flow freely into the oil reservoir.

• The version of GQ blower and size of the oil unit define the amount of oil to be
added.
• The unit is filled with oil via the oil filler on the oil unit.
• On versions with a flange-mounted oil pump on the blower, the intake line to the
oil pump is also to be filled for first commissioning.
Please also refer to the information and items in the drawings.
• During the start phase this version requires an external pre-lubrication pump.
After filling, a sealing plug and a new sealing ring are to be fitted correctly to the
oil filler.
• Pay attention to Min. and Max. levels!
The oil level is to be checked as per the information in the maintenance sched-
ule.
If necessary, the oil level should be corrected.

Notes on lubricating oil for operation with central forced-feed oil lubrica-
tion
• To keep the lubricating oil pressure losses as low as possible on starting the
blower, the minimum oil temperature data on the instrument list are to be ob-
served.
• Also refer to the instrument list for the necessary operating oil temperature. The
operating oil temperature can be influenced by changing the amount of cooling
water and the oil pressure.

The oil system comprises, e.g., the following components:

• Oil reservoir, oil pump, oil filter, oil pressure regulating valve, cooling system ...
and for monitoring the oil pressure, a pressure switch with pressure indicator.

Oil pressure / oil pressure monitoring

• Refer to the instrument list for the necessary oil pressure.
The drive motor for the blower is shut down if the oil pressure drops to the value
stipulated in the instrument list.
The oil pressure can be changed using the oil pressure regulating valve.

Blower oil supply unit oil pump

• The oil pump supplies the necessary lubricating points with lubricating oil.
• As on starting the blower there is no oil pressure, the oil pump must be placed in
operation prior to the blower.
The oil pump can then build up the necessary lubricating oil pressure prior to the
start phase.

38 G4-070 A EN
Translation of the original instructions
Oil pump, directly mounted on the blower 10.1
• In another variant of forced-feed lubrication, the oil pump is directly mounted on
the blower.
With this version a timer relay is necessary to bypass the lack of oil pressure
during the start phase.
• A pre-lubrication pump is also necessary during the start phase.
• When the blower is started up, the oil pressure builds up gradually.
To ensure the oil pressure switch is not tripped and the blower is able to start,
the switch is bypassed by the timer relay for the time defined.

ENGLISH
• In the case of a flange-mounted blower oil pump, the oil pump intake line is also
to be completely filled with oil for first commissioning.

Filing the intake line in the case of a flange-mounted pump:

• Remove sealing plug, open hand valve, fill pump intake line with lubricating oil.
• After filling the intake line is to be re-fitted with a sealing plug and a new sealing
ring and the hand valve is to be closed.

valve and the prevailing operating parameters.
• The oil pressure is pre-set in the factory.
It is necessary to adjust the oil pressure on-site under operating conditions.
• The recommended oil pressure is stated in the instrument list.
• Oil pressures outside the limiting value range can be implemented subject to
additional measures in consultation with Aerzener Maschinenfabrik.
ENGLISH

• To adjust the oil pressure:

- Remove the protective cover.
- Adjust the threaded rod (1); this is secured on a type-specific basis.

Oil reservoir
• The oil reservoir contains all the necessary components for the correct supply of
oil to the blower.
Depending the place of use, the oil systems are equipped with an oil heater.
The switching points for the oil heater are included in the instrument list.
