ABSTRACT
Over the last few decades, the world has witnessed rapid urbanization. One of the many
complex problems resulting from increased urbanization is related to management of
storm water from developed areas. If storm water is not managed properly, it may lead
to flooding of urban areas and deterioration of water quality in rivers and receiving
waters. Urban drainage systems are used to manage urban storm water.
Storm water drainage problem is one of the major challenges facing in many parts of
Kolkata and its surrounding areas. So, the study focuses on the assessment of storm
water drainage system in Agarpara (Ward number 08) town as a case study using
statistical analysis, GIS, Google Earth Software, CivilStorm software etc. Based on
primary and secondary data collected, the problems in the areas are categorized as
construction, management and design problem. The method used to investigate
management problem is direct field data collection and site visit but the construction
problem is analyzed using field survey.
CivilStorm is a software which was developed by Bentley Systems, USA. It has been
extensively used in this study. As per the data received, the inputs have been given in
the software and accordingly the results are interpreted. Finally, appropriate mitigation
measures were proposed for drainage system in order to serve the area from different
negative effect and drainage structures for the future purposes sustainably. Additionally,
managing and improper construction alignment problem for the existing system are
investigated and to avoid this problem periodic cleaning and modification of slope is
recommended.
