The Relationship Between Emotional Intelligence and Achievement Motivation Level for
Grade 12 Students
Emotional intelligence (EI) can be defined as the ability to monitor and distinguish
among the emotions of oneself and others in order to guide one’s reasoning and actions (Salovey
& Mayer, 1990, as cited in Christie, Jordan, Troth, & Lawrence, 2007). Achievement motivation
level, on the other hand, is someone’s desire to successfully do well in anything (APA, n.d.).
Previous studies have concluded that both of these variables positively influence secondary
Kristiawan, & Fitriani, 2020; Yazici, Seyis, & Altun, 2011). Nevertheless, there is a notable lack
of research on the degree of their relationship, especially in the Philippines. Some of the
scholarly articles that do exist are contradictory in nature: Sinha & Suman (2013), for instance,
reported a positive correlation between EI and achievement motivation level while Sabir &
Thomas (2020) did not. Therefore, the researchers believe that further investigation is needed
the Philippines implemented distance education (DE) at the start of the 2020-2021 academic year
(AY). At the time of writing, such a system is still in usage. As a result, the EI and achievement
motivational levels of Filipino students have been considerably impacted. This study aims to
to Grade 12 (K-12) Basic Education Curriculum which better addresses these 2 issues.
In this new normal, online learning has become a difficulty for a majority of Filipino
learners. This correlational quantitative research study intends to determine the relationship
between EI and achievement motivation level for Grade 12 students at Divine Light Academy
(DLA) during Quarter TBA of the 2021-2022 AY. The results of this study will be utilized in
developing an updated version of the K-12 Basic Education Curriculum that can meet the
