Wall Footing

Instructions: Solve the following problem. Write and show your solutions on the answer sheet
provided. Box your final answers.

Problem: A wall footing is to support a 300 mm wide reinforced masonry wall with a dead load of P
kN/m and a live load of 220 kN/m. The bottom of the footing is 1.2 m below the final grade. Assume
the soil weighs 15.74 kN/m3 and the allowable soil pressure is 193 kPa. Use 75 mm as clear covering.
Use 22 mm diameter main bars and 12 mm diameter for temperature and shrinkage bars. Assume f’c=
20.7 MPa and fy=415 MPa. For shrinkage and temperature bars, assume fy=415 MPa. Using NSCP
2001:
a. Compute the width and depth of footing.
b. Compute the spacing for main bars and spacing for shrinkage and temperature bars.
c. Draw the footing plan.

Note: Calculate your load P using the following rules:

a. If your I.D. number ranges from 0 to 100, then calculate your P by adding 200 to your I.D. number.
Example, if your I.D. number is 2012-0002, then the value of P is 200+2=202 kN/m.
b. If your I.D. number ranges from 101 to 1000, then calculate your P by dividing your I.D. number by
10 and adding 200 to that number. Example, if your I.D. number is 2012-0298, then the value of your P
is (298/10)+200= 229.8 kN/m.
c. If your I.D. number is greater than 1000, calculate your P by dividing your I.D. number by 100 and
adding 200 to that number. Example, if your I.D. number is 2012-1234, then the value of your load P is
(1234/100)+200= 212.34 kN/m.

Wall Footing Subjected to Bending

Instructions: Solve the following problem. Write and show your solutions on the answer sheet
provided. Box your final answers.

Problem: For the wall footing shown in the figure: f’c=28 MPa, fy=275 MPa, unit weight of concrete is
23.5 kN/m3 and unit weight of soil is 15.7 kN/m3. Effective depth of footing is 425 mm.

a. Determine the effective soil pressure if the allowable soil pressure is 210 kPa.
b. Determine the minimum width of the footing, in meters rounded upwards to the nearest 0.10 meter,
such that the effective soil pressure is not exceeded.
c. Using the dimension obtained in (b), and considering a one-meter strip, determine the ultimate shear
due to factored loads acting on the critical section for one-way shear or beam shear.
d. Using 25 mm diameter bars, what is the required spacing?
e. For shrinkage and temperature bars, determine the required spacing using 12 mm diameter bars.
Assume fy=275 MPa.
f. Draw the footing plan.

Note: Calculate your load P using the following rules:
