“Mom, what are we going to buy?” asked the excited Sheila, who went with her Mom to
buy stuff at the warehouse store for home furnishings.

“I’m looking for something that can cover up our fuse box so that it won’t become an
eyesore. It is a bit challenging, because it is not a regular shape. It is a trapezoid,”
shared Mom.

“Hmmm… I think a still-life artwork will look great, or a mirrorI’ll be taking pictures of our
choices,” suggested Sheila.

“That sounds like a good idea. We can take

a break at the cafe and decide which one to
buy I have the sketch of our fuse box here
with the measurements. Let’s go then to the
frames and mirrors section,” invited Mom
as she took a copy of the store’s booklet,
her notepad, and her pencilsaid Mom..

“Look at this painting. It looks as big as our

fuse box. Dear, can you help list down our
choices and then later, we can take a break
at the cafe and decide which one to buy,”
said Mom.

“Oh sure, Mom! I’d be happy to help you,” answered Sheila.

After an hour of going around the store, Sheila and her mom went to the cafe and
ordered some food. She then showed her notethe pictures with measurements to her
mom.

Polygons are congruent if they are equal in all respects:

- Same number of sides.

- All corresponding sides are the same length,
- All corresponding interior angles are the same measure.

“So we got three options, right? What are those dashes all about?” asked Mom.

Sheila gave her mom an excited grin. “Since wWe just need to get the one that is
exactly the same or congruent with our fuse box, then I just used markings to check on
the congruent sides and angles. ,” she explained.

“Do you mean that sides or angles with the same markings are congruent?” asked
Mom.

“Yes! Two or more polygons are congruent if all their corresponding sides and angles
are congruent. Of course, they should be the same kind of polygon. I named the corners
with letters to easily identify the corresponding sides and angles,” Sheila explained
confidently.

Example: ΔABC is congruent to ΔDEF. Example: ∠ABC corresponds to ∠DEF.

“Hmmm… Looking at your sketch, the still-life artwork is a parallelogram. I can see that
not all the interior angles and sides are congruent with our fuse box. The photo frame
and the mirror are trapezoids too just like our fuse boxthe frame seems to be smaller
than the size of the fuse box. I can obviously see that the corresponding sides and
lengths with the fuse box are not equal,” said Mom.

“Sheila showed the list to her mom. “You’re right, Mom. However, the photo

Congruence statement
When stating that two triangles are congruent, use a congruence statement. The order
of the letters is very important, as corresponding parts must be written in the same
order. Notice that the congruent sides also line up within the congruence statement.

“Then, we’re getting the still-art paintinga mirror!” exclaimed Mom.

“Yes, we areWait, Mom, I’ll list the corresponding sides and angles to check if the
painting is congruent to the fuse box,” Sheila grabbed her pen and mini notebook.
