Learning Outcomes

At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:

 use the formula V1/V2 = T1/T2 to find the volume or temperature of a gas
before or after a thermodynamic process in which the gas is kept at a
constant pressure.

Discussion

A balloon inflates in boiling water and shrinks in cold water. Bread

dough rises when placed in the oven. French physicist Jacques Charles
explained these phenomena in 1787 using direct temperature-volume
relationship at constant pressure. This is known as Charles’ Law.

Charles’ Law states that when the temperature of the gas increases, the
volume also increases; and, if the temperature decreases, the volume
decreases. Doubling the Kelvin temperature doubles the volume; tripling the
Kelvin temperature increases the volume thrice; and so on.

Charles Law, when stated mathematically, is as follows.

V
V=kT or T =k
It may also be written as follows.

V1
T1
= V2
T2
or V1T2=V2 T1
Where
V1 – volume of a gas at initial condition
T1 – Kelvin temperature of the gas at initial condition
V2 – volume of the same sample gas under a new condition
T2 – kelvin temperature of the same sample gas under a new condition

Example:
A sample gas with a volume of 6L is heated from 35 degree Celsius.
Calculate the new volume of the gas if the pressure remains the same.

Solution
Given: V1 = 6L
T1 = 35℃ + 273 = 308K
V2 = ?
T2 = 75℃ + 273 K

Computation
V1T2 = V2T1, therefore, V2 = V1T2/T1
= 6L (348K)/308K
= 6.78L

The increase in volume is reasonable because there is an increase

in temperature.

2. What will be the volume of a gas sample at 355K if its volume at 273K is
8.75 L?

Assignment
