Now I am joining the ANT 1 Class in STIP for increase my knowledge and learn about management,
leadership, and how to be captain as a profesional.

The captain is the highest leader on board the ship, safety and smoothness in the

process of operating the ship is his responsibility. As a representative of the company

on board the ship, the captain also functions as a manager for his subordinates (ship

crew) to command, control and supervise the work system that has been set in the

company rules to support the smooth operation of the ship. The safety factor is the main

priority in every job, so the captain must also be able to motivate crew awareness in

terms of safety, especially life safety. As a guide for the captain in carrying out his duties

on board the ship, the company provides a safety management system (SMS) manual.

The captain is the leader on board the ship who is fully responsible for the safety of the

ship, passengers, and cargo during the shipping process from the loading port to the

destination port. To enforce this responsibility, criminal sanctions are needed and these

sanctions have been regulated in Law No. 17 of 2008 concerning Shipping (Sailing

Law).
Based on Article 1 number 36 of the Shipping Law, a ship is a water vehicle with a

certain shape and type, which is driven by wind power, mechanical power, other energy,

towed or suspended, including vehicles with dynamic support, vehicles under the water

surface, as well as floating equipment. and floating buildings that do not move.

The definition of skipper can be seen in Article 1 number 41 of the Shipping Law, which

states that the captain of the ship is one of the crew members who is the highest leader

on the ship and has certain authorities and responsibilities in accordance with the

provisions of the legislation.

Because the master is responsible for the safety of his ship, the captain should check

the safety and security of his ship before sailing. This is stated in Article 117 of the

Shipping Law, namely:

(1) The safety and security of water transportation, namely the condition of the

fulfillment of the following requirements:

1. the seaworthiness of the ship; and

2. navigation.

(2) The seaworthiness of the ship as referred to in paragraph (1) letter a must be fulfilled

by every ship in accordance with its shipping area which includes:

1. ship safety;

2. prevention of pollution from ships;

3. manning of ships;

4. ship loading and unloading line;

5. the welfare of the crew and the health of passengers;

6. the legal status of the ship;

7. safety management and pollution prevention from ships; and

8. ship safety management.
