Cause and Effects of Mucilage in the Marmara Sea

The Sea of Marmara is a sea located in the Marmara region of our

country, connecting the Anatolian and European sides. It functions as a
trade center as it connects the two continents. It also contains many living
ecosystems.According to S. Sevencan, Turkey to take precautions against
“sea snot”, June 2021 considered as an important waterway, the Marmara
Sea has hosted about 230 species. Again, according to this source, since it
is an inland sea, the sea is highly affected by mucilage called sea snot
.Wastes left to the environment without treatment, environmental and air
pollution, global warming are among the main causes of mucilage. The
increase in this mucilage not only makes the job of fishermen more
difficult, but also causes the death of many sea animals.

The first cause of mucilage is the release of waste into the environment
without treatment. There are many factories, workplaces and houses near
the Marmara Sea. People’s irresponsible behavior leads to pollution of the
sea and the emergence of sea snot.As reported by M. Sarı, Sea snot in
Marmara Sea threatens tourism, fisheries, human health, May 2021 as a
result of these wastes, nitrogen and phosphorus in the water increase and
this causes mucilage. In addition, pollution of the sea results in the death of
many animals. Another reason is the damage caused by global warming to
the environment. Many animal ecosystems have already disappeared as a
result of global warming. The absence of these animals contributed to the
increase in mucilage because many organisms in our ecosystem destroy
harmful substances.

The recent increase in this mucilage, which has existed for many years,
has affected many people, especially animals living in the Sea of

Marmara. For example; mucilage prevents the passage of oxygen under the
sea and the fish die. The death of fish means less income for fishermen. In
addition, according to H. Averes, Turkey’s sea snot outbreak, June 2021
this environmental disaster can also cause diseases such as cholera and e
coli. In addition to all these, the Marmara Sea is a major tourism center.
The presence of mucilage prevents both foreign and domestic tourists from
coming to Istanbul. This situation will affect our country economically.

The sum up, the mucilage, mainly caused by wastes and global warming, is
increasing day by day. This situation negatively affects our country both
economically and biologically. To prevent this, it is necessary to start with
various means and microorganisms. In my opinion, we should prevent this
as soon as possible. Also ecosystem is more important than tourism and
fishing. We must work together to prevent this for improving our
ecosystem in no time.
