THEORY

Motor employing the squirrel cage type of motor is known squirrel cage induction motor. The
rotor consists of cylindrical laminated core with parallel slots which consists of conductors or heavy bars
of copper. The rotor bars are electrically welded to two heavy short circuiting end rings. Since the bars
permanently short circuited it is not possible to add any external resistance in series for starting purpose.
The rotor slots are given a slight skew to the shaft. The uses are
1. It helps the motor to run quickly by reducing the magnetic hum.
2. It helps in reducing the locking tendency of motor.

In small motors the entire core is placed in a small mould and all the bars and end rings
are coated in one piece.
The load test on induction motor is performed to compute its complete performance i e. Input
power, Output power, powerfactor, slip, powerfactor and efficiency.During this test, the motor is
operated at rated voltage and frequency and normally loaded mechanically by eddy current dynamometer
and from the observed data, the performance can be calculated, following the steps given below.

Applications of 3-Φ squirrel cage induction motor

1. Lathes
2. Drilling machine
3. Agricultural and industrial pumps
4. Loom motors
5. Compressors
6. Industrial drives

PRECAUTIONS

Before starting and after completion

1. The 3-Φ ac power supply should be in off position.

2. There should not be any load on the motor.
3. Initial calibrations should be done in the eddy current dynamometer.
4. Do not disturb the null knob during the experiment.

PROCEDURE

1. Connections are made as shown in (Fig – 1) circuit diagram.

2. By observing the precautions, switch the 3-Φ ac power supply.
3. Start the motor by using the DOL (direct on-line starter) starter. Now the motor will start to
rotate in no load speed.
4. Observe the directions of rotation of the motor. In case, it is reverse, change the phase
sequence of the applied voltage.( RY OR YB OR BR any two)
V S AKSHIT 19BEE0435
5. Note down the readings of all the meters and the speed under no load condition.

6. Increase the load current in steps from low load current to full load current by adjusting the
torque set knob in eddy current dynamometer.
7. Take - down the readings of all the meters and speed for each step.
8. To stop the experiment press the red button in DOL starter after observing the precautions.

Procedure (MATLAB / Simulink)

1. Open a New Matlab/Simulink model
2. Add powergui block and change the time to continuous
3. Open the Simulink library browser and add required blocks/components to Simulink Model
4. Connect as shown in the circuit Diagram
5. Feed the parameters as per the rating
6. Increase the load step by step and record the readings in a Excel sheet / notebook
7. Calculate - % Slip, output power, power factor and efficiency for each reading
8. Plot the required graphs

1. INPUT POWER:
Input power is measured by two wattmeters, OR double element wattmeter properly connected in
the circuit.
If two wattmeters are connected in circuit Input power = (W1+W2)*Multplying factor
If only double element wattmeter in circuit Input power = W * Multplying factor

RESULT:
Performance characteristics of 3- phase squirrel cage induction motor is examined by the above experiment. Three phase induction motors use a
squirrel-cage winding in the rotor. There are no electrical connections to the rotor, but current is induced into the rotor windings by
electromagnetic induction. The squirrel-cage winding produces a magnetic field that's pushed and pulled by the stator magnetic field.
