Scientific Material Summary

The solar panels are made of electronic compounds made of silicon and are a
semiconducting material originating from sand. When photons, one of the elements
of light, collide with the plates, the silicon electrons move, generating a continuous
electrical current, and this current receives metal wires that transfer it through
sequentially connected semiconductors. Then an electric inverter converts this current
to alternating current. Consequently, the generated electrical energy can be stored in
installed batteries, which allows it to be consumed directly or sold to a power-
supplied entity. The productivity of the solar panel depends on the amount of
sunlight, its height, its orientation, and its surface .
It should be noted that only two percent of global electricity today is provided by
solar panels.

The cost of solar energy has decreased significantly over the past few years. This can
often be attributed to increased solar cell efficiency and lower panel prices. The first
useful silicon solar panel invented by Bell Laboratories in 1954 was about 6 percent
efficient. The development of solar technology has been at a historical pace since
then. At present the panels are manufactured as efficiently as 30%, which can
produce 25% more electricity than the lower level economy panels on the previous
market. In 1977 solar panel cost was $77 per watt. In just 40 years’ time, it has
reduced by 99.2%.
