THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF CABLE/TENSILE /MEMBRANE STRUCTURES

Type of Cable Structures

1 Single – Curvature
- utilize parallel series of cables to support surface-forming beams. They are susceptible or prone to flutter, but this
can be reduced by increasing the dead load on the structure.
2 Double- Curvature
- have upper and lower sets of cables of different curvatures to make them more rigid and resistant to flutter.
3 Cable-stayed Structure
- have vertical or inclined masts from which cables extend to support horizontally spanning members arranged in a parallel or
radial pattern.

Types of Tensile Structures

1 Linear Tensile Structures
- Linear tensile structures are the structure in which the all the member are in linear tensile forces. These linear members are
supported by the compression members, but the major loads are carried out by tensile members.
2 Three-dimensional Tensile Structures
- Three-dimensional tensile structures is a compilation of elements that are primarily in tension, with the compression being
transferred to a central mast and down into the ground.
3 Surface-Stressed Tensile Structures
- Surface-stressed tensile structures are same as other 2 tensile structure, but the surface members are tension bearing
members. Fabric tensile structures are the great examples of Surface-stressed tensile structures, where the vertical pillars hold
the special designed fabric which is in tension.

Types of Membrane Structures

1 Frame membrane structure
- This type of membrane structure is composed by a steel frame or other types of frame structure covered with
membrane to form roofs or exterior walls. Since it is structurally stable and the openings can be formed flexibly,
this type of membrane structure is highly economic and widely used for multiple applications, regardless of the
sizes.
2 Suspension membrane structure
- This type of membrane structure is formed mainly by the membrane material, and the basic form is the suspension
structure. It is abundant in rise and fall on the surface, so it has superior designability which takes advantage of the
uniqueness of the curved surfaces.
3 Air-supported membrane structure
- This type of membrane structure uses the air pressure that is blown continuously into inside of the roofs and/or
walls made of membrane materials to inflate the membrane until becoming stiff to support its self-weight and all
other surface loads.
