This lesson explains the types of research and presents examples in the
different areas or fields. Examples are provided for each type of research to
understand what the research is intended to do and to study.

*Research Across Disciplines*

Today, a number of studies using qualitative approach may range from art to
science; such as fields like arts humanities, natural sciences, social sciences and many
more. Here are some examples across disciplines:

1. Natural sciences, including the medical fields, follow the “scientific method”,
a stringent process for proving or disproving established scientific truths, explaining
natural phenomena, or discovering new knowledge. Scientific researchers are expected
to set aside their personal biases, maintain objectivity, and aim for accuracy and
precision. This type of discipline gives stress to measurable and observable facts
instead of personal views, feelings, or attitudes. To become scientific researcher in
conducting your research study, you must collect data in controlled ways through
questionnaires or structured interviews.

2. Social sciences, on the other hand, it is people-oriented. The data collected

in this research represents personal views, attitudes, thoughts, emotion, and other
subjective traits of people in a natural setting. While natural researchers attempt to be
exact in their research, the social researchers accept the uncertainty and imprecision
in the study of human behavior, language, society, and culture.

3. Arts and humanities, a recent development in many academic settings,

specifically in the arts and humanities, is the acceptance of “artistic research,” where
an artist’s work, for instance, a novel, painting, or a performance, is considered as the
research itself. In this field, man’s social life is also subjected to research studies.
However, researchers in this area give emphasis not to man’s social life, but to the
study of meanings, significance, and visualizations of human experiences.
