Too much money is spent on maintaining and repairing old buildings rather

than on building new, modern, space-saving ones

Some people consider that old buildings should be replaced with new ones
because they require less money to be constructed and maintained. However, others
claim that we should not abandon our historical heritage. I totally agree that old
buildings are extremely important even in modern society.

First of all, the old historical buildings are absolutely essential for the overall
cultural awareness and education of the next generations. If they are demolished, it
will be quite easy to manipulate people distorting past events and deeds as there is no
evidence left. Furthermore those buildings might be quite memorable for many
people.

Secondly, the variety of architectural styles develops people’s perception of

beauty. It’s fantastic how the building can reflect certain feelings or emotions or even
tell stories. Different looks make the overall scenery of city or town more diverse and
gripping to observe. It is also possible to identify country or even city by the way the
way the building looks.

Finally, nobody states that old buildings must be maintained and repaired by
the government. I’m sure there are a lot of people who would like to do that. For
instance, in Czech Republic you can buy a real historical building if you prove that
you are capable of maintaining it. You will even get some financial support or
compensation from the government later.

To summarize, people still need old historical buildings and it is essential to

remember about them. It’s possible to maintain them and construct the new ones at
the same time.
