4. Rita was given a sample of contaminated water. The water 3m
has multiple impurities like dried grass, sand and some
harmful microorganisms. She wants to separate all the
impurities.

Help Rita in accomplishing the entire activity by suggesting

suitable methods.

● Rita needs to filter insoluble impurities like dried

grass from the water sample for which filtration
method should be used. A piece of cloth or filter
paper can be used to separate out the filtrate from
the residue.
● After that fine impurities like sand can be separated
by the method of sedimentation and decantation.
● Finally, harmful bacteria can be killed by either
boiling the water or by adding chlorine tablets to the
water.
5. Krishna and his brother Lakshay were measuring the length of 3m

(a) Measurement by Krishna (b)Measurement by Lakshay

i. What do you think is an appropriate unit to measure the
length of a table?
ii. Look at the image and identify the person who has
measured the length of the table in an incorrect way.

III Long Answer Type Question 1Q x 5m=

5m
7. Once upon a time there was a tailor shop and two brothers
named Ram and Shyam owned the shop. They used the length
of their forearms from their elbows to the top of their middle
figure to measure the length of clothes. The pictures of the
hands of both the brothers are shown below. Due to this a lot
of ruckus was created since all the clothes they made were ill
fitted. The villagers complained to the king and the king
implemented a standard unit for measurement.

a. Name the traditional unit that these brothers were using. 1m

cubit

b. Explain why all the clothes made by the two brothers were ill 2m
fitted?
Due to the difference in the size of the hands of both the
brothers the clothes were ill fitted. Suppose Ram told
Shyam to keep the length of a particular shirt as two
lengths of his hand starting from his elbow to the middle
finger, then the length of the shirt will be bigger than it is
supposed to be. This is because Shyam’s hand is bigger
than Ram’s hand and the measurement of the shirt’s
length will be incorrect.
c. What do you think was the standard unit for measurement of 2m
length implemented by the king and why was this step
important?
The standard unit of measurement implemented by the
king was metres. This was an important step because
length of hands may vary from person to person and to
measure something accurately it was important to set a
standard unit that can be followed by everybody in the
village.
