11 The picture given below is “Green house” 2
Why it is called as Green house and what is the use
of it? Explain.
Ans: A green house is a house of walls and roofs
usually made of transparent materials.
So during day light hours, heat is trapped inside, gets warmer in day
and night too.
Its stays warm even during winter. People grow tomatoes, flowers and
other plants in them
12 Mahatma Gandhi, the father of our nation had promoted Ahimsa Silk. 2
What is the reason for doing Ahimsa Silk?
Ans: The cocoons are not allowed to become adult moth and killed in
the process of silk production. Many animal rights organizations have
protested against this. “Peace silk” or “vegetarian silk” attempts to save
moth to complete its life cycle.
The silk is cleans and spun instead of being reeled. So soft silk is
obtained without killing the moth. This is what Mahatma Gandhi
promoted Ahimsa Silk: Not to kill the moth
13 Raju and Vikram both are best friends. One day they were learning 2
about Valence and valences of different elements. So they wanted to
make a new compound.
Raju had taken “Chromium” element and Vikram had taken “Oxygen”.
Both combined the elements using valence concept and got new
compound. What is the chemical formula and chemical name of the
compound they got?
Ans: Raju has Chromium which is Cr+3
And Vikram has Oxygen which is O-2
So when combined we get Chromium oxide. Formula is Cr2O3
14 Dr Suresh was doing some experiments in the lab. He got a phone call 2
and while talking he mixed water into concentrated sulphuric acid.
Suddenly there was an explosion, and Dr.Suresh’s hand was burn.
(i).What is the reason for explosion in his experiment?
(ii). What treatment he should take in order to get relief from pain of
burning skin?
Ans: (i) When water is added to acid, huge amount of heat energy is released
and it causes explosion and burns the skin.
(ii) The treatment for burns of skin is to apply base solution (Milk of
magnesia or any weak base) as it neutralizes the pain.
15 What did ancient people do when there were no clocks or calendars to 2
calculate time, day, month and year?
People used to follow the daylight followed night which makes a
complete day.
They understood the seasons- winter, spring, summer and monsoon. A
year was one full cycle of these seasons.
A month was measured from one new moon to the next new moon day.
They follow the purnima (full moon day) and ammavasya (new moon
day) which is known as Lunar calendar
16 LED (Light Emitting Diode) is the most efficient in producing light 2
energy when compared to the other bulbs like filament bulb and CFL
bulb.
Why LED’s are best when comparing to other bulbs? Give at-least two
reasons.
Ans: (i) LED are energy efficient, as they use less electric energy and give
more light energy
(ii) LED can light for longer hours
(iii) Very less amount of heat energy is released.

17 Give reasons for the following 3
(i). While demonstrating light is essential for photosynthesis, why potted
plant kept in dark place for 24 hours.
(ii). Name the chemical used in the experiment of carbon dioxide essential
for photosynthesis. And what is its use in the experiment?
(iii). In the experiment of detecting starch in a leaf, why the leaf is dipped
in the alcohol and boiled?
Ans: (i) Potted plant is kept in dark place because to free or complete the
starch in the leaf.
(ii) Potassium hydroxide. It is used to remove CO2 in the bell jars
(iii) The leaf is dipped in alcohol and boiled because to remove the
chlorophyll in the leaf.
18 Observe the following diagram and answer the following 3
(i). Name the parts ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ you find in this diagram
(ii). Name the thick yellowish liquid which releases from ‘A’ and mention
its use?
(iii). Name the juice which release from ‘C’ and mention its uses?
24 Imagine you are a Sericulture farmer. Few of the school students came 5
to see your farm and clarify their doubts on sericulture farming. Below
are the questions which they asked.
Now answer the question given below.
(i).What is sericulture?
(ii). Explain the process involved in sericulture.
(iii). What are the life-threatening risks faced in sericulture?
Ans: (i) Sericulture is the science of raising silkworms for the production of
raw silk
(ii) The process involved in sericulture
a. Rearing of silkworm on Mulberry leaves: Adult female moth will
lay egg under controlled environment. They are allowed to hatch
and the silkworms eat the mulberry leaves to grow bigger and make
cocoons.
b. Collection and processing of cocoon: Cocoons are collected and
immersed in boiling water to get one of the filament and the
undamaged cocoons are unwounded by process called Reeling or
filature. In this process we get raw silk.
c. Production of commercial silk: Single filaments of silk are
washed, dried, dyed and twisted to make stronger thread used for
weaving or knitting. The process of creating silk yarn is called
Throwing and applies finishing process to improve appearance and
durability.
(iii) Occupational hazard in sericulture
1. Unutilized leaves and faeces of silkworm create unhygienic
conditions that pose health risk.
2. Disinfectant used in rearing room and pesticides used in mulberry
plantations cause eye, nose, and skin irritation.
3. Allergens on moth wings cause asthma and conjunctivitis.
4. Workers immerse their hand in boiling water which leads to blisters
and skin diseases.
5. Chemicals used in dyes can affect the intestines.
25 Explain the following reactions in the form of chemical equation 5
(i). When acids react with bases
(ii). Acids react with metals
(iii). Acids react with carbonates
