MODULE NO: 1
MODULE TITLE: MEANING AND RELEVANCE OF HISTORY
TOPIC: NO. 1
WRITER: GLENN C. BALBERAN, MAEd.

The Dominican Blessing

(13th Century Prayer)
OPENING PRAYER
May God the Father bless us.
May God the Son heal us.
May God the Holy Spirit enlighten us,
and give us eyes to see with,
ears to hear with,
hands to do the work of God with,
feet to walk with,
a mouth to preach the word of salvation with,
and the angel of peace to watch over us and lead us at last,
by our Lord’s gift to the Kingdom.

Amen.

“Those who cannot remember the past, are condemned to repeat it”
- Geogre Santayana

MODULE INTRODUCTION AND FOCUS QUESTIONS:

Many people think that history is merely lists of names, places, dates, and important events.
However, the study of history is more than just knowing and memorizing facts. There have
been many different approaches to the study of history. It is a historian’s duty to draw insights
from the ideas and realities that have shaped the lives of men and women and the society. But,
what is history? Why study history? How is it different from other disciplines or other forms of
writing? How is it the same?

human society.
2. Differentiate History from Past
- The past is set in stone and cannot be changed, but history is an ongoing debate
about how to understand the past that is subject to revision and change. History

“duties”?
As students, it is beneficial that we be informed about current events. Conducting
historical research provides more answers to queries and provides a solution to a
specific situation. It will be our responsibility to discuss what we've learned so that the
younger generation can gain a better understanding of the issue.
3. How did the word history come about?
According to Philip Durkin, it is a shorter version that evolved from an ancient Greek
verb that means “to know”. History was derived from the Greek term historia, which
originally signified inquiry, or the act of seeking information, as well as the knowledge
gained via investigation.

POST – TEST

Pause for a few minutes and think about or reflect on your past. Has your past influenced you
in one way or another? How does your past shape your identity and behaviour?

Actually, I have a lot of memories that I'd like to resurrect, but they must be buried for now.
Living in the past is preferable to living in the present because it provides a greater sense of
community and enjoyment, particularly among the people. By modernization and
advancement, attitude, lifestyle, beliefs, climate and even tradition were affected.
Industrialization had some positive benefits, such as making work more affordable, employing
thousands of people, and improving people's daily lives, but causing exploitation to the
employees and contributing to overcrowding in cities and environmental harm. Unfortunately,
our world is far from its true beauty; nonetheless, I think that continuous improvement is
necessary, and I am willing to contribute to the world's transformation.
