II. DESCRIPTION
A. MORPHOLOGY
1. FLOWER:
The flowers of Marang are distinguished as male and female. The male flowers are minute
with stiff spikes while the female flowers are in conical heads
2. LEAVES:
The leaves of the Marang tree are arranged alternately. They are ovate in shape with 7 to 9
lanceolate lobes. The leaves have glossy, dark green above and green below, stiff and
petiole. Inflorescences occur in the leaf axils
3. FRUITING:
Fruit is subglobose, up to 20 centimeters in diameter, green yellow, densely covered with
stiff, hairy processes about 1 centimeter long, borne at the end of long flexible branches,
with a mass of seeds embedded in pulp. Fruit flesh is white, edible, juicy, and fragrant but
strong-smelling edible pulp
4. FRAGRANCE:
The Marang fruit has a strong scent and is considered superior in flavour to jackfruit. The
scent reminds some of the durian but is not so intense and it is smelled in the thick skin, not
the fruit pulp. The pungent scent (almost chemical like scent) is in the outer rind.
