Himago was practiced by Felipa Nangkil in her own house located in Purok 7, Sitio Lintian, Anonang,
Valencia, Bohol. The place is surrounded by a variety of plants where she used to get the materials
needed in the process of her healing practice/ritual.

II. DESCRIPTION OF INTANGIBLE CULTURAL HERITAGE

A. Summary of the element

(Description of the history of the practice, occasion/season, processes involved, procedures, beliefs associated,
settings, aims, social functions, cultural meaning, and other pertinent data)
Before the advanced way of treating sickness, Himago was already used by the elders as an
immediate cure for illnesses such as stomach ache, back pain, etc. They usually used “batang-
batang” plant as the main element in the process of Himago. The plant was crushed using
mortar and pestle, and a glass of water was put in to make a juice. Tranfer the juice into a glass,
cover it with "gabi-gabi" leaf, turn the glass upside down and massage it to the patient. From
juice of batang-batang plant, it will turn into a jelly, if the patient have plenty of “panuhot” in
the body. The elders believed that it could cure bodily ailment as proven by the people who had
undergone Himago.

Mrs. Felipa Nangkil, 83 years old. She practiced Himago for 66 years.

According to Mrs. Felipa Nangkil, it was passed from generation to generation, from her mother-
in-law up to her granddaughters.

III. STORIES/NARRATIVES ASSOCIATED WITH THE ELEMENT

One day, one of her children fainted from illness. Her great grandmother–in-law, searched for an
alternative treatment for the illness of her daughter. As she roam around her place, she saw an
abundant “batang-batang” plant. She picked some and use it as a patch in the painful area of the body.
After patching the affected area, she found out that it was effective until she decided to enhance the
process of the treatment now known as Himago.

IV. SIGNIFICANCE

Indicate type of significance, e.g. historical, aesthetic, scientific, social, socioeconomic, socio-political, spiritual and then explain

Scientific: Himago uses plants from the environment. It follows procedures and deep concentration to
perform the process.

Socio-economic: Patients pay any amount in exchange for the service of Himago.

Spiritual: A short prayer must be done first before performing the Himago. A sign of the cross using salt
at the top of the patient’s stomach was also done.
