Lab 1
Photosynthesis
Aim: To investigate if the light is necessary for Photosynthesis
Materials: 2 similar potted plants, cupboard
Methods:
1) Two similar potted plants were collected.
2) The plants were observed, and observations was recorded.
3) One of the plants were placed in a cupboard for one week while the other remains in a
well-lit environment.
4) The

Observation/Result:
Two potted plants were collected. Both plant was green in colour and the stems were at the same

length. After the plants were separated in different area for observation the plant that was in the

cupboard started to lose the green pigment in the leaves and the stem of the plant started to grow

longer and before the week ended the plant eventually die. The plant that remained in the lit

environment still had the green pigment and did not die.

Discussion:

All plant require sunlight for the process of photosynthesis, during photosynthesis plant

trap light energy with their leaves. Plants will then use the energy of the sun to change water and

cardon dioxide into a sugar called glucose. The equation of photosynthesis is 6CO2 + 6H2O →

C6H12O6 + 6O2. Plants cannot survive long without the present of light. The plant that was placed

in the cupboard was not receiving any sunlight or any form of light, the process of

photosynthesis started to slow down when there was no sunlight present. In result of that the
plant stem started to stretch searching for sunlight source. The leaves started losing the green

pigment and the color of the leaves started to look pale. The plant in the cupboard eventually die.

Temperature is another factor that can affect the rate of photosynthesis. When the

temperature gets too cold, the rate of photosynthesis will decrease. Plants also can not

photosynthesis if it gets too hot. The temperature increase the rate of photosynthesis increases as

the chemical reactions in the chloroplasts work faster.
