The Task

Your class has listened to a radio discussion on how more young people can be encouraged to study
science. You have made the notes below:

Write an essay discussing two of the points in your notes. You should explain which way would be
more effective in encouraging young people to study science, providing reasons to support
your opinion.

It is often said that education is one of the most important factor in the development of a
country and in specially science especially has a huge role in improving our everyday life. Without this
interesting and stimulating subject, society wouldn't have the living conditions that we all enjoy
nowadays. Still the latest reports show that the number of students interested in a science degree has
dramatically declined in the past decade. Taking all of this in consideration, school programmes and
government grants would make young people interested in this field.

First of all, schools should invest more in practical classes with experimental activities.
Students cannot really relate to science without a clear understanding of what they are facing and
through experiments they could be more intrigued and challenged in studying science. Instead of
putting students to learn by heart thousands of formulas by heart teachers should be more practical.
There are many interesting experiments, which can make a deep impression on the students.
Besides experiments, schools could also provide trial lessons to for the future students, in order to
capture catch their attention.

Second of all, government grants are a way to trigger young peoples’ interest in science.
Nowadays, with life being so expensive and unaffordable, many young people prefer to get a job
rather than going to university. Governments can facilitate students’ access to scientific universities
by giving them grants. Being offered a scholarship, students may consider studying science as an
important field to work on, which could lead to a bright future.

All in all, by offering financial support to talented young people and encourage by encouraging
them this way to pursue a scientific career is the best investment that governments can do for the
future of the society. Both schools and governments should collaborate their long term strategies for
attracting people’s interest in studying science.
