You are on page 1of 2

Part A: Factorial Notation:

The following is from Chapter 1, Section A (p16-17) of the black book.

1. Watch this video to familiarize yourself with factorials.

2. Complete the problems from your book: p 17 #1-3. Check answers in the back of the book.
3. Optional Challenge: Compete problem: p17 #4.

Part B: Binomial Expansion:

The following is from Chapter 1, Section B (p17-20). Read through and answer questions 1-2 in your math
notebook.

Part C: Pascal’s Triangle

1. Read about Pascal’s Triangle: What is Pascal’s Triangle?

2. Watch video on how to draw Pascal’s Triangle:Video on how to draw Pascal’s Triangle. In this course,
we will use Pascal’s triangle to help us expand binomials, although there are many interesting
applications of this triangle.
3. Draw this triangle in your notebook down to line 7 or line 8.
4. Refer back to Part B with the picture of the expansions of the binomials and the coefficient of each line.
Do you see where Pascal’s Triangle shows up in the coefficients?
6
5. Refer back to Part B and look at the coefficients you used to expand (𝑥 + 𝑦) . Do your coefficients
from this line match up with the ones given in Pascal’s Triangle? Why?
6. Watch this video and take notes on expanding this binomial expression. Note the different ways shown
to find the Binomial coefficients.
3
7. You try: Expand and simplify: (2 + 𝑦)
8. Optional Extension: Watch video: Cool properties with Pascal’s Triangle

Part D: Check-in and Attendance

Remember to complete this form to record your attendance.

Can you do the following? Show all steps.

6
1) Expand (𝑥 + 𝑦)

3
2) Expand (2 + 𝑦)
