Definition
Epidemiology is the study of the distribution and determinants of health-related states or events
in specified populations, and the application of this study to control of health problems.
Concept of Epidemiology
Epidemiology is a strategy for the study of factors relating to the etiology, prevention, and
control of disease; to promote health; and to efficiently allocate efforts and resources for health
promotion, maintenance and medical care in human populations.
It is the field of medical science which is concerned with the relationship of various factors and
conditions which determine the frequencies and distributions of an infectious process a disease
or physiologic state in a human community.
Epidemiology is the study of disease in populations. Veterinarians and others involved in the
preventive medicine and public health professions use epidemiological methods for disease
surveillance, outbreak investigation, and observational studies to identify risk factors of zoonotic
disease in both human and animal populations. Knowledge of these risk factors is used to direct
further research investigation and to implement disease control measures. The use of hazard
analysis critical control point (HACCP) systems depends greatly on information produced by
epidemiological studies. Epidemiological methods are used for disease surveillance to identify
which hazards are the most important.
Epidemiological principles and methods are applied in:
 Clinical Research
 Disease prevention
 Health promotion
 Health protection and
 Health services research

ULTIMATE AIM OF EPIDEMIOLOGY

1. To eliminate or reduce the health problems of community.
2. To promote the health and well-being of society as a whole.
3. To describe the distribution and size of disease problems in human population.
4. To identify etiological factors in the pathogenesis of disease.
5. To provide data essential to the planning, implementation, and evaluation of services for
the prevention, control and treatment disease and to setting up the priorities among these
services.
