Chapter 1

The Problem and Its Setting

Introduction

Sleep issues can strike anyone at any age. Inadequate sleep has a negative impact

on a person's physiological and psychological well-being. The purpose of this study is to

assess the pre-sleep behaviors, sleep length, and sleep pattern of school children, as well

as the relationship between their sleep schedules and sleep habits.

Inadequate sleep has a negative impact on mental functioning, which in turn has a

negative impact on student’s exam performances and ultimately, their grades. The

amount of sleep one gets in a 24 hours period has a direct impact on one’s physical

health, mood and mental performance.

According to an expert, senior high school students in grades 9 through 12 should

focus not only on mastering their academic work, but also on perfecting study habits that

will prepare them for a lifetime of productive learning - from varsity to the workplace.

"Mastering the mechanics of learning is just as important as learning itself, and it's a

critical component of dealing with the demands of higher education once learners become

students," says Dr. Gillian Mooney, Dean: Academic Development and Support at The

Independent Institute of Education, South Africa's largest private higher education

provider. "When students reach their senior year of high school, it's no longer simply

about how much time they spend in front of their books; it's also about how good that

time is. These years are ideal for learning skills that will aid them in managing the rising

responsibilities they will confront in the future "she explains.

The hypothesis will be raised in the study and will be tested at 5% level of

significance. HYPOTHESIS: The sleeping patterns of the respondents does not affect

their study habits.
