ACTIVITY 3: LOOKING FOR ANSWERS

INSTRUCTION:
Look for a research article related to any of the topics discussed on this module. Make article review of your
chosen research article by pointing out its impacts to mankind, to the society, and to the environment. Cite its
important features, its advantage and disadvantages and other important features of the article. The review
must at least 1-2 pages and your claims must be supported with other studies or references. The research
must be 4-5 years recency. All references must be cited using APA format.

Title: Hydrocarbons for the next generation of jet fuel surrogates

Topic: Hydrocarbons under classification of Organic compounds

Review:
Majority of jet engines around the world uses petroleum-derived jet fuel or coal derived jet fuel. Studies have
shown that these fuels can cause different health effects such as damage to the liver, decreased immune
response, impaired performance on neurological function tests, and impaired hearing. Dermatitis and damage
to the skin have also been observed in laboratory animals following dermal contact. The environment impact
of burning these jet fuels is the fact that it releases greenhouse gases such as Carbon dioxide into the Earth ’ s
atmosphere and oceans. It can be estimated that a large passenger jet may consume at least 5 gallons per mile.
Thus, what difference would using jet fuel alternatives produced by hydrocarbons will make compared to the
ones used today.

Hydrocarbons are naturally-occurring compounds and form the basis of crude oil, natural gas, coal, and other
important energy sources. Hydrocarbons are highly combustible and produce carbon dioxide, water, and heat
when they are burned. Therefore, hydrocarbons are highly effective as a source of fuel. The study evaluated
various hydrocarbon molecules that can be employed as next generation surrogate components for
conventional and alternative jet fuels. In my opinion the study would have been better if the researchers found
a solution in using these hydrocarbon molecules as jet fuel alternatives if it offered a solution to deal with the
harmful effects the fuel brings.
