INTRODUCTION OF THE TOPIC

Poverty is about not having enough money to meet basic needs including
food, clothing and shelter. However, poverty is more, much more than
just not having enough money.
In addition to a lack of money, poverty is about not being able to
participate in recreational activities; not being able to send children on a
day trip with their schoolmates or to a birthday party; not being able to
pay for medications for an illness. These are all costs of being poor.
Those people who are barely able to pay for food and shelter simply
can’t consider these other expenses. When people are excluded within a
society, when they are not well educated and when they have a higher
incidence of illness, there are negative consequences for society.
We all pay the price for poverty. While much progress has been made
in measuring and analyzing poverty, the World Bank Organization is
doing more work to identify indicators for the other dimensions of
poverty. There is no one cause of poverty, and the results of it are
different in every case. Poverty varies considerably depending on the
situation. Feeling poor in Canada is different from living in poverty in
Russia or Zimbabwe.
WHY IS THE PARTICULAR TOPIC CHOSEN?

I chose ‘poverty’ as a topic for my project because the study brings to light the
extent to which microfinance activities of rural banks is helping to reach out to the
unbanked poor in rural communities. This therefore helps policy makers to identify
the vulnerable communities and mount tailor-made services for them. The study as
well outlines the challenges faced by the various institutions providing
microfinance services to the poor and see how best they could improve on it to
meet the set target.

The study also highlights the contribution made by these rural banks to help
government and other development partners‟ effort to help lift the rural poor out of
chronic poverty to an acceptable standard of living.

NEED AND OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY—

The study of “Poverty” is needed to ensure that we can reach out to people as we
will be aware of its causes and effects and thus making our country developed.
Education plays a very important role in order to bring a change in the country and
world.

REVIEW OF LITERATURE

REVIEW OF LITERATURE
Traditionally, the concept of poverty has been associated with income which is the
main subject matter discussed every day. Currently, individuals or people are
classified as poor when they are deprived of resources including income needed to
obtain certain basic necessities of life. Examples of such basic necessities may
include but not limited to material goods, meal, medical care among others that
help them to be responsible in society (International Poverty Centre, United
Nation’s Development Programme).

There are some books published on poverty. Some prominent are:-

 BANKER TO THE POOR BY MUHAMMAD YUNUS

 POOR ECONOMICS BY ABHIJIT BANERJEE AND ESTHER
DUFLO
 DEAD AID BY DAMBISA MOYO
 DEVELOPMENT AS FREEDOM BY AMARTYA SEN
 MORE THAN GOOD INTENTIONS BY DEAN KARLAN AND
JACOB APPEL
