Chapter I
PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

Climate is the average weather in a place over many years. Climate takes

hundred, thousand or even millions of years to change.( https://eu.ucar.edu/) But

nowadays the world are experiencing sudden change on its climate. Sometimes it’s too

hot and sometimes it’s too cold. Especially the Philippines particularly Looc, Calamba

City is also experiencing changes in frequency and intensity of extreme events such as

typhoons, drought and floods. This kind of events are causes of climate change

(https://www.sprep.org). But still the people of Looc,Calamba city are most likely to be

unaware of this phenomenon. Kaingin is still in practice, garbage and trashes are

everywhere, and also there are lots of smoky vehicles are used.

Climate change is also known as anthropogenic climate it is a change in the

earth’s climate due to a natural process that are already occurring or predicted to occur,

because of greenhouse gases that makes the planet’s temperature warmer. It is also due to

human activities such as cutting trees, using vehicles that emits too much smoke, burning

fossil fuels and many more (https://www.sprep.org). with these activities the effects of

climate change are rapidly increasing, such as El Niño and La Niña, rising of sea level,

increasing cases of illnesses and diseases.

Rising sea level is one of the effects or evidence of climate change. According to

Talaña (2015) if all the ice in arctic and green land many parts of the Philippines will

submerge in the ocean water. Huge parts of Luzon, including Manila might be covered of

the rising sea level. This includes the provinces and cities of Aparri, Isabela, Pampanga,

Batangas, Mindoro, Palawan, Naga, Iloilo, Roxas, Cagayan, and many more urban and

rural may be erased from the map as well. This melting of ice is estimated to occur by the

year 2100.

Responding to the climate risks, Philippine government has shown leadership

through a strong commitment to a climate policy and institutional reform agenda. In the

year 2009, the Republic act 9729 or the climate change act was turned into law. The law

mandates the mainstreaming climate change considerations into government policy and

planning. This law provided a foundation for the creation of the climate change

commission, the national framework strategy on climate change (NFSCC) (denr.gov.ph).

however some people are still not participating in such projects about climate change.

With these the researcher of Looc Integrated School wants to know if the people

of Barangay Looc are aware of climate change and its causes and effects to the

environment. The findings of this study may be helpful because this will help the

community to know more about climate change and its causes and effects.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aimed to know the level of awareness of people of Looc, Calamba

City about climate change Specifically, this study wants to answer the following:

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:

a. Age;

b. Educational attainment;

c. Job;

d. Marital status?

2. What is the level of awareness of the respondents about climate change in

terms of:

a. Awareness about climate change;

b. General view about climate change?

3. What plan of action may be suggested to increase the level of awareness of the

respondents about climate change?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study may provide vital information regarding the causes, and effects of

climate change. This study will be significant to the following:

Community. This study will be beneficial to the community of Barangay Looc,

Calamba city because they will know the importance of being aware and having a

knowledge about climate change and its causes and effects.

School. This study will also be helpful to the school for them to integrate climate

change in their lessons and to spread more awareness about the causes and effects of

climate change, and the climate change itself.

Future researcher/s. This will also be advantageous to the future o next

researchers to use the findings of this study to support their researches similar to their

study about climate change and its causes and effects to the environment.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

This study will focus on the awareness of people of Looc about climate change.

This will be conducted on the year 2019-2020 at barangay looc Calamba CIty. This will

be an existential phenomenology. The researcher will use the random sampling in

choosing the respondents of the study. The line of questioning during the survey was

limited to the purpose of knowing the awareness of people of Barangay Looc about

climate change and its causes and effects.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Awareness- knowledge or perception of a person about a certain topic.

Climate change- abnormal change of climate due to natural processes and human

activities.

The paradigm shows on how the study was conducted. To discuss briefly the

input, process and the output here are the following: using the survey form or the

questionnaire survey 100 respondents from barangay looc. The questionnaire contains

questions that are only limited by the purpose of knowing the respondent’s awareness

about climate change. As the researcher predicted all of the respondents from Barangay

Looc are aware about climate change and its causes and effects.

THEORETRICAL FRAMEWORK

This study is anchored on the Ramanathan’s greenhouse theory (1988), Plass’

carbon dioxide theory of climatic change (1955) ,and Piaget’s theory of cognitive

development. These related theories and perspectives on how climate change will affect

us. It explains the reasons why do people need to be aware about climate change. It also

explains that even small children need to be aware on what’s happening to their

surroundings.

As cited in Ramanathan’s greenhouse theory of climate change (1988) the

atmospheric concentration of several radioactive gases are increasing due to human

activities. It is also stated that the climate system will be restored to equilibrium by a

warming of the troposphere and the cooling of the stratosphere. The predicted changes

during the next few decades, could far exceeded natural climate variations in historical

times.

According to the carbon dioxide theory of climatic change of the recent

calculations of infra-red flux in the region of the 15 micro carbon dioxide (CO 2) band

show that the average temperature of the earth’s surface increases 3.6 degree Celsius. It is

also stated that when the total of carbon dioxide is reduced below a critical value, it is

found that the climate is continuously oscillates between a glacial and inter-glacial stage

with a period of ten thousand years. It also cited that the extra carbon dioxide are released

into the atmosphere by the industrial processes and other human activities causes the

increasing of temperature during present century. In contrast with other theories of

climate, the prediction of this theory is that the warming trend will continue, at least

several years (Plass,1955).

This study is also anchored by Piaget’s theory of cognitive development since one

of the objectives of this study is to know what age is most likely to be aware about

climate change. The theory is a comprehensive theory about the nature and development

of human intelligence. He believed that once childhood plays a vital and active role in a

person’s development. Is primary ide was known as the developmental stage theory

where this theory deals with the nature of knowledge itself and how humans gradually

come to acquire construct and use it. To Piaget cognitive development was a progressive

reorganization of mental processes resulting from biological maturation and

environmental experience. He believed that children construct an understanding of the

world around them, experiences between what they already know and what they can

discover in their environment ( https://courses.lumenlearning.com).

Chapter II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Climate change is the unusual change in the climate it is caused by natural process

because of the greenhouse gases that makes our planet’s temperature warmer and also by

human activities such as different kind of pollution, cutting down of trees, burning of

fossil fuels, using things that emits methane, nitrous oxide, and carbon dioxide that

contributes to greenhouse gases that makes the temperature rise.( https://www.sprep.org)

Starting from the 19th century many scientists already showed evidences that

climate change is occurring at the time. The first evidence is the rising of global

temperature. The earth’s temperature has increased about 1.62℉ or 0.9℃ since the late

19th century. It is caused by largely increased carbon dioxide (CO 2) and other human

made emissions into the atmosphere. The second evidence are the warming of the oceans

it I stated that the ocean absorbed heat with much 700 m or about 2,300 ft of ocean

showing warming of more than 0.4℉. the third evidence are the shrinking of ice sheets in

Greenland and Antarctica. According to NASA’s gravity recovery and climate

experiment shows that greenling lost an average 286 billion tons of ice per year while

Antarctica lost an average 127 billion tons of ice per year between the years 1993-2016.

The last evidence stated is the rising of sea level. Global sea level rose about 8 inches in

the last century the rate in the last 2 decades however, is nearly double that of the last

century and is accelerating slightly every year (https://climate.nasa.gov).

M 8

Climate change also has effects in our environment today and also in the future,

such as the changes in precipitation pattern or weather patterns but this extra precipitation

is not spread evenly around the globe, and some places might get less precipitation than

they used to get. , there will be more drought and heat waves in the Philippines it is called

el niño, it can damage crops and the soil that is used in agricultural purposes., hurricanes

will become stronger and more intense, Antarctica will likely become ice free and

because of that sea level will rise 1-4 ft by the year 2100 (https://climate.nasa.gov).

Humans also suffer from the effects of climate change. One of it is climate change

affects people’s health, one of its causes is the dirty fossil fuel emission that can lead to

respiratory disease such as asthma in both children and adults. The next one is climate

change affects the people living in coastal communities, as the earth’s temperature gets

warmer and warmer glacier melt and ocean water expands, causing the sea level rise

about 7 to 8 inches on average since the year 1990. And also climate change can also

affect the food security. As the global temperature rises, weather pattern shifts, and

precipitation becomes more unpredictable, farmers are struggling to keep up

According to a study conducted by Barredo (2018) climate change greatly affects

our country since it has a climate sensitive economic processes such as agricultural

business. Using random sampling, 24 respondents were used from 1st to 4th year students.

As the

result of the study there is a correlation drawn between the answer of the respondents

where their knowledge is obtained, it also shows that age is also correlated to the

deepened knowledge and attitude of the respondents towards climate change.

Another study conducted by Magulod (2018), one of the major concerns of the

world is climate change, since the students are the future leaders and the most qualified

individuals in terms of protecting the environment.180 undergraduate students from

different departments were used. The results confirmed that the respondent’s gender, age,

birth order, and parent’s educational attainment affects the student’s awareness,

meanwhile their attitude about climate change differs according to their age and

departments

On the other study conducted by Lubos (2019), humans have a significant role in

the careful management of river ecosystem since the social and economic activities have

impact on the river. this study assessed the knowledge, attitude, practices, and actions of

the settlers of 22 villages along riverbanks in Cagayan, De Oro about climate change.

This study uses quantitative and qualitative approach with field observations. As the

result of the study shows that the respondents have moderate knowledge, attitude,

practices, and actions, their environmental awareness did not translate into environmental

protection sustainability and climate change prevention.

Another study conducted by Pandve & Pawar (2011) Climate change is one of the

most devastating environmental threats assessing the public’s awareness regarding

climate change is necessary. The cross-sectional survey was conducted in the urban adult

population who had written consent. The result shows that the general population is

aware about global climate change since 91.68% answered they observed that climate is

changing in an abnormal way. Their personal efforts are more important in mitigating

climate change as per the urban general population.

Lastly, on the study conducted by Lopez & Malay (2019), awareness about

climate change starts in school. This study aimed to assess the level of awareness and

attitude of senior high school students in one academic institution in the Philippines

towards climate change, 276 grade 12 students were used from aged 16-19 from different

tracks and strand. The result shows that the students become aware of climate change

through several sources like Television, internet, and in school.

METHODOLOGY

RESEARCH DESIGN

This study uses quantitative and qualitative research approach, this study wants to

know the level of awareness of Looc Calamba about climate change and its causes and

effects. The researcher will use a questionnaire as research instrument. The questionnaire

contains questions that are only limited on the purpose of knowing if the people of

barangay looc is aware about climate change. The researcher also wants to know what is

the respondent’s profile is most likely aware about climate change.

POPULATION AND SAMPLING

To determine the number of respondents this study used the purposive sampling

to 21,754 population of Looc, Calamba as of May 2019(psa.gov.ph). the sloven formula

was used to choose respondents purposively.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

In gathering the data the researcher adapted a questionnaire from , Whitmarsh.L

(2003). Survey questionnaire (‘climate change’ version1 ). The questionnaire has three

(3) parts the respondent’s profile, the awareness about climate change, and the general

view about climate change. It is only limited in knowing the respondent’s awareness

about climate change.

DATA GATHERING

One Hundred (100) respondent from Looc Calamba City was used in this study,

the researcher distributed survey questionnaire to the respondents in Looc Integrated

school, St. Mary Magdalene Colleges, and Mahogany Villas.

DATA ANALYSIS

After the survey, the gathered data was sorted out and classified according to

similar responses of the respondents from their profile, awareness about climate change,

and general view about climate change. As for the open ended question the researcher

used Consensual Qualitative Research (CQR), Where the respondent’s answer to open

ended questions was transcribed and was analyzed carefully by the researcher.

Question 2: what do you know about it (climate change)?

For this question most respondents ages 11 below says that climate change is

“the change in climate” as if they literally answered the question according to the main

word climate change. Then as for the ages 12-24 most of them answered that “climate

change is the abnormal change of climate due to human activities or natural process.”

They give the exact meaning of climate change. Next ages 25-34 they said ““climate

change is the abnormal change of climate due green house gases that makes the earth

warmer and warmer.” They have the same answer with the respondents ages 12-24 but

they differ in giving the reason. The respondents ages 35-44 have the same answer as the
