INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

One of the most significant changes in education over the past 50

years is the introduction of ever-improving technology into the

classroom. As with all changes, this development has had positive and

negative implications. Some people wonder if the increased use of

technology has an overall negative effect on the education of Filipino

teenagers. Any conclusion must be based on a consideration of the pros

and the cons of using technology in educational settings. Many schools

are using technology to further educate students. Some local and foreign

educators are using technology to educate modern students, in which

they can relate with. According to Elizabeth Nuttal (2017), there are

many benefits and advantages for students especially the young

generation that is more exposed to technology, those benefits are

students have more opportunities, saves their time and many more

things that can contribute to their knowledge.

Technology has a big role in our society, but some are misusing

technology. Technology should only be utilized when it is appropriate to

the situation at hand. The term instructional technology has changed

significantly recently, describing any tool that is used to enhance

learning. By this definition, even the textbook was, at one point,

technology available for students and teachers. Technology does not

replace good teaching, however. While a textbook contains all the

information that might appear on an exam, a teacher can’t simply assign

the reading of a textbook and expect a good outcome on the test.

Teaching is more than just connecting students to materials… it’s about

creating a learning environment that takes into consideration all that we

know about students, the brain or how we learn, and the subject

material and puts it into practice. But then technology is also the

number one distraction to a student and it is a serious negative effect of

technology on teens' education is the distraction that it may pose within

the learning environment. The opportunity to access social network sites

and games can tempt students away from planned learning activities.

Such distractions can hamper their overall progress and their potential

to succeed. Teachers must monitor the use of games and social network

sites to ensure that students remain on task and complete assignments.

Such attention by teachers can ensure that the overall effect of

technology on teens in the classroom is positive.

This research study aims to analyze the effect of massive use of

modern technology on the academic performance of the Grade 11 San

Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila. However, the true effect might be attenuated as

the effect of the massive use of modern technology on the academic

performance is complex, there are both positive and negative effects, and

performance is only reported as an average at school level. The results

presented in this study can be an important contribution to the literature

in this field as little research has been conducted in St. Anthony’s High

School of Barbaza Inc. to interpret the effects of technology to the

academic performance of the students.

In this study researchers will be referring to the social

constructivism theory, a theory that was coined by John Dewey

(1933/1998) and was improved by Lev Vygotsky (1978). Social

constructivism theory is a sociological theory of knowledge according to

which human development is socially situated and knowledge is

constructed through interaction.

The findings can hopefully inspire future research in the field to

increase the knowledge of technology- education. Technology is a recent

marvel in our everyday life that has taken off. Technology allows the

most difficult tasks to become seamlessly easy and more efficient. In

education, technology has allowed the dissemination of knowledge to be

dispersed instantly and it allows for quicker and more effective

communication. Also, technology has allowed students to be engaged

and learn in ways that they never have in a classroom setting before.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

The researchers compiled different sources from the internet and

other studies that contain relevant to the system proposed. It is

composed of: the effects of technology to the education of teenagers, the

use of technology in education, advantage and disadvantage of

technology in education, impact of technology on human health, and the

use of technology in education and teaching process.

The Effects of Technology to the Education of the Teenagers

In 2017, higher education and technology are inextricably linked.

Students rely heavily on laptops, mobile phones, and the all-

encompassing internet to complete assignments, in many cases

preferring the ease and speed of online access and sourcing over

traditional forms of library-based research and note-taking.

Noticing the impact technology has had on virtually every aspect of

the college experience, Melissa Bowley ’17, an economics major, teamed

up with Dyson Economics Professor Anna Shostya, PhD, to further

investigate the necessity of technological resources in college. Their

research took them halfway around the world (literally), as the duo

compared the impact of technology on academic performance in both the

United States and China. “I was reading the Wall Street Journal one day,

and I saw this article about note-taking in the classroom,” says Bowley.

Intrigued by the article, Bowley thought it’d be interesting to survey Pace

students on the issue—and further investigate note-taking methods that

students prefer (by hand vs. laptop), and what methods students find

more effective.

“People who use laptops for note-taking can take notes perhaps

faster, but do they retain the information as well as people who take

notes by hand?” says Shostya. “That’s what she wanted to investigate.”

Initially, Bowley was looking to investigate in a local fashion, and

survey students at Pace. However, Melissa happened to be enrolled in

Shostya’s comparative economics course, From Wall Street to the Great

Wall, which culminates in a two week trip to the University of Shanghai

for Science and Technology (USST). The duo realized that the research

would greatly benefit from exploring the issue in comparative fashion—

especially given governmental restrictions that block internet access on

Chinese campuses.

Bowley and Shostya proceeded to survey of 98 students at USST

and 98 students at Pace, asking a number of questions regarding note-

taking, laptop usage, and reliance on technology. What they discovered

was that despite internet restrictions, the distinctions weren't exactly

stratospheric.

“The results were pretty similar,” said Shostya. “For example, we found

that in China, 67% use desktops for personal use, and 33% academic

use. In the United States it was really similar—60% personal, and 40%

academic.” “Our main takeaway was that students are students

everywhere,” says Bowley.

The duo noted that United States students are more likely to use

laptops in the classroom, finding that Chinese students prefer traditional

methods of note-taking by hand. However, they reason that this might

have to do with the reality that internet access isn’t readily available in

the classroom in China, erasing the possibility for note-taking to be

supplemented with online research (or online distractions). Shostya and

Bowley noted that for this reason, Chinese students are much more

reliant on their mobile phones, which aren’t as restricted as laptops and

desktops.

“When you have comparable samples, it’s really interesting how

technology has the ability to transcend cultural and economic

differences. Some of the graphs were so similar, it was astonishing,” says

Bowley.

Shostya and Bowley were also very impressed with the

resourcefulness of Chinese students, who were able to work around

restrictions that many American students take for granted to get their

assignments done, succeed in the classroom, and help power China to

economic vitality.

As she nears graduation—and gears up to present her findings on

May 4 at Pace’s student-faculty research day—Bowley notes that the

research was one of her most rewarding experiences at the University,

and will surely assist greatly as her Pace Path takes her beyond

undergraduate study.

“If anyone does research, it has to be something you’re passionate

about," says Bowley. "It was a really holistic experience. It allowed me to

use my technical skills that I learned in class and apply theory to the

real world. It was really testing, and I’m very proud of it.”

classroom setting before. According to Spears (2012) she cites Donovan,

that was used in a school setting. Spears (2012) states, “The first

change in the context of education” (p. 1). Spears continues in her study

and describes Microsoft’s 1:1 initiative through the Anytime Anywhere

Learning (AAL) program. Spears (p. 1) cites the work of Donovan et al.

(2007), “An increase in enthusiasm for teaching and learning with

technology, an improvement in student writing skills, an increase of

authentic and purposeful use of technology…are some of the benefits of

1:1 technology integration programs like the AAL program.” These

programs in the 1980’s and 1990’s paved the way for presidents,

legislators, administrators, and educators to become aware of how

positively technology could impact the student and teacher in the

classroom, alike.

Our world is overrun by technology. While technology has aided

the human race with many advancements and conveniences, it also

presents with some unfortunate consequences for our children.

Children as young as two can be seen watching a cartoon on a

tablet or playing with a cellphone.

Technology has made it convenient to keep our children occupied

while we tend to our everyday tasks. While children seem entertained

using devices such as tablets, television, smartphones, and computers,

many studies show that these devices may have negative effects.

Overuse of electronic devices may cause impairment in the

development of a child’s social skills. This includes the ability to make

friends in person, take responsibility for actions, display good manners,

use polite language, control emotions and temper, follow verbal

directions, and develop empathy for others.

A child who excessively uses electronics may become isolated and

fail to develop normal communication skills such as conversational

skills, listening, and making eye contact.

A child may also be less able to identify social cues and be less

attentive. A child may avoid social interaction to spend more time using

electronic devices or may use the device to avoid social situations due to

social anxiety because of underdeveloped social skills.

Not only can the chronic use of technological devices have a

negative impact on the development of social skills, it can also affect a

child’s mental health.

Today’s youth represent the first generation to grow up completely

immersed in, and surrounded by, technology. According to one study, it

was found that teenagers who persistently logged on to Facebook were

more likely to present with psychological issues such as mania,

paranoia, aggressiveness, antisocial behaviour, narcissism, and

increased substance use.

Studies have shown that children who regularly use the Internet

and play video games exhibit more anxiety and depression.

They can also be more impulsive, moody, and have difficulty

maintaining focus. They may experience social anxiety due to a lack of

social skills and are more likely to express feeling bored or unhappy at

school.

Studies have also found that technological devices can also have

harmful implications on the brain.

In children, the brain is still in the process of development which

makes the brain more susceptible to environmental influences.

According to research, playing video games releases dopamine and

produces effects that are similar to drug cravings which can result in

addiction.

Executive functioning in the brain can also be impacted. Executive

functions include the ability to plan, prioritize, organize, and control

impulses. The frontal lobe is the area of the brain that controls our

executive functioning as well as cognitive skills, such as judgment and

emotional regulation.

Research has shown that excessive use of electronics can cause

gray matter atrophy, the shrinkage or loss of tissue volume.

Gray matter controls functions such as memory, muscle control,

emotion, speech, decision making, self-control, and sensory perception

such as seeing and hearing.

Volume loss has also been seen in the frontal lobe, the striatum,

which is involved in suppression of unacceptable social impulses, and in

the insula, which is responsible for the development of empathy and the

ability to read social cues.

16

Barbaza, 5706 Antique, Philippines
Cp No. 0917-7237931 E-mail Addressː SAHSBI@yahoo.com

Excessive use of electronic devices has also been found to have

physical effects on a child.

One study showed that children who spent more time playing video

games and watching television had a higher risk for obesity, sleeping

problems, and stomach issues.

Too much TV time may also hinder language acquisition.

Television watching is not a creative activity and can result in a lack of

imagination.

A child may have difficulty entertaining him or herself without

electronic devices. These children are less likely to play outside, may lose

interest in toys, show a lack of motivation, and have very few hobbies

and interests other than their electronics.

It has also been found that watching too much television

discourages children from reading and increases their desire for material

goods; thus, decreasing a child’s ability to be patient and to be able to

delay gratification.

If you think your child may already be addicted to electronic

devices, it’s not too late to start making positive changes in your child’s

life.

the Ugly.

Technology's effect on our health represented by runner holding

Do you remember when your parents would scold you for sitting

too close to the television? They always warned us that the screens

would rot our brains and our eyes would fall out. When cell phones came

out, everyone said the radiation from them was damaging our brain cells.

Now, things really aren't much different. New technologies are

introduced every single day, and with them new concerns. So what is

technology's effect on our health, really?

When you search for "technology makes us lazy" online you’re

bombarded with lists of reasons why everyone believe tech may be

holding us back, physically. Of course, not all of the data presented for

18

these arguments are objective. Some are but not all. Let’s take a look at

why people believe technology’s effect on our health could be negative.

A few years ago, The Next Web reported “11 Ways Tech Has Made

Us Lazy”. Author and Social Media Editor for the company, Sherilyn

Macale, wrote the following blurb about why she believes tech is making

us lazy, as a result of entertainment always being at our fingertips:

“From the comfort of my own apartment, while watching the fight

on Pay Per View, I can pause mid-match to double check that my

favourite songs on iTunes have been downloaded or my playlists on

Spotify synced to my smartphone. I switch inputs on my television to my

PS3 which has a Blu-Ray DVD of Avatar in to watch one of my favourite

clips. I then slip on my XBOX 360 headset to flip inputs again and finish

up party chatting with my friends list, as they’ve been waiting for me to

play a session of Call of Duty with them. After a quick round, I flip back

to Pay Per View, resume the fight, and tweet out what’s happening on

screen like a sports announcer, amusing myself with the flood of replies.”

Man sleeping on a couch shows technology's effect on our health.

It’s easy to read this blurb and scoff a little at the scenario. Is anyone

really switching back and forth from their PPV to iTunes to their PS3 to

their XBOX and back? Maybe, but probably not as commonly as Macale

is sensationalizing it in this article. Also, this was in 2011, before the

19

Hulu-Netflix-Amazon Video wars, and Apple Music versus Spotify

became a thing. A lot has changed since then. For one, our access to

entertainment has only become easier and more immediate.

In contrast to Macale's point, Author Lauren Lanna for The

Odyssey recently wrote about why technology does not make us lazier.

Rather, it offers us opportunities to actively seeking out new knowledge,

to be more engaged with the world and others rather than less. In her

article titled, Technology Does Not Make Our Generation Lazy, she

explains that technology allows users to have access to more information

than imaginable with just the click of a button:

"I have any information I could ever need at the touch of a finger,

and I can spend less time clarifying and researching facts, and more time

learning new things that are interesting and unique to me. I work just as

hard at school and at my job despite my cell phone use on breaks and

free time. In many ways my phone is like an add-on to my arm, but I

don't use it to cause problems or seem uninterested in the world around

me. In fact, many times its the other way around. - And just because I

may use more technology in my daily life does not mean I am lazy."

So, can all of this ease-of-access actually make us lazy? Does it

make us more productive? That may be up to us, ultimately. We make

the decision every day as to whether or not we should research

something new, take a walk, or watch Orange is the New Black. A great

number of us may choose the walk, while some will choose Netflix. Is

that really the technology's fault? You tell me.

Advantage and Disadvantage of Technology in Education

According to Elizabeth Nuttall, one of the most significant changes

in education over the past 50 years is the introduction of ever-improving

technology into the classroom. As with all changes, this development has

had positive and negative implications. Some people wonder if the

increased use of technology has an overall negative effect on the

education of U.S. teenagers. Any conclusion must be based on a

consideration of the pros and the cons of using technology in educational

settings.

Fantastic Opportunities

The use of computers, the Internet and interactive whiteboards has

opened up a world of opportunity to students, who consequently have

access to a great deal more information, which can help them learn and

conduct research topics. The Internet has played a huge role in making

such information accessible. The variety of topics and the diversity of the

activities that can be completed to aid learning has also expanded. This

makes learning more fun for students and suits a variety of different

learning styles.

Saving Time

Another benefit for students and teachers alike is the speed at

which students may learn, as technology has reduced the time required

to create or access resources. There are also very few occasions when a

student will be required to take lengthy notes because printed

information is available to them. Teachers and students also save time

by using the computer to complete work rather than spending time

writing out work and drawing diagrams.

Using Fewer Basic Skills

One of the major concerns about technology in the classroom is

that it prevents students from developing and using basic literacy, math

and communication skills, all of which are essential in both day-to-day

living and working life. The exclusive use of computer-based tools such

as spelling and grammar checkers, as well as calculators, enable

students to complete assignments without knowing how to manually

perform those same functions.

Technical Difficulties

A common problem in classrooms is the failure of technology due

to technical difficulties. While equipment is being repaired, students

experience delays in their learning. This counteracts the time-saving

benefits of technology. To prevent learning loss due to these difficulties,

teachers must be prepared with other resources and task assignments.

A Distraction in the Classroom

A serious negative effect of technology on teens' education is the

distraction that it may pose within the learning environment. The

opportunity to access social network sites and games can tempt students

away from planned learning activities. Such distractions can hamper

their overall progress and their potential to succeed. It is important that

teachers monitor the use of games and social network sites to ensure

that students remain on task and complete assignments. Such attention

by teachers can ensure that the overall effect of technology on U.S. teens

in the classroom is positive.

The Impact of Technology to Human Health

Technology can have a large impact on users' mental and physical

health. Being overly connected can cause psychological issues such as

distraction, narcissism, expectation of instant gratification, and even

depression. Besides affecting users' mental health, use of technology can

also have negative repercussions on physical health causing vision

problems, hearing loss, and neck strain. Fortunately, there are steps that

can be taken to help alleviate these health issues.

Technology and Psychological Issues

The headline of a 2012 study by the Pew Research Center’s

Internet and American Life Project is a good summary of the current

debate on how the rapid growth of technology will affect our minds:

“Millennials will benefit and suffer due to their hyperconnected lives.”

Pew surveyed “technology experts and stakeholders,” who generally

agreed that those who best capitalize on new technologies will be able to

effectively find and sift through large amounts of information as quickly

as possible. On the flip side, technology may make us impatient, subject

to frequent distraction, and desperate for constant entertainment.

In a recent book, Professor Larry Rosen of California State

University, Dominguez Hills posits that many people today could be

diagnosed with what he calls an iDisorder. Rosen summarizes the

disorder this way in an article: “An iDisorder is where you exhibit signs

and symptoms of a psychiatric disorder such as OCD, narcissism,

addiction or even ADHD, which are manifested through your use—or

overuse—of technology.” An obsessive need to check for text messages, a

desperate desire to constantly update your Facebook status, or a near-

addiction to iPhone games are all manifestations of iDisorder.

Whether or not changes in our behaviour due to technology use

classify as a disorder, there is no denying that technology is affecting the

way our minds operate. It remains to be seen exactly how technology will

affect our psyches, but some changes are already starting to become

apparent. (Liz Soltan)

Possible Negative and Positive Impacts of Technology to Human Health

Like it or not, the use of technology is rooted in our personal lives.

From the moment we wake up until the moment we go to bed, we have

hundreds of interactions with various devices, software programs, and

tools. But how is technology impacting our health? That’s a question we

can’t afford to leave unanswered.

Recognizing the Positives

We hear a lot about how technology is bad for us – and we’ll

discuss some of that in the following section – but it would be foolish to

only highlight the negatives when there are actually plenty of positives.

Here are three specific benefits to be aware of:

Devices That Monitor Health

The growth of wearable technology has been particularly positive in

the world of health and medicine – both for patients and healthcare

providers. This has been especially noticeable in the increased quality of

care most providers are able to offer their patients.

25
ST. ANTHONY’S HIGH SCHOOL OF BARBAZA, INC.

Cp No. 0917-7237931 E-mail Addressː SAHSBI@yahoo.com

As tech blogger Jennifer Gregory points out, “It is often difficult to

make a correct diagnosis and determine the best course of treatment

when given limited information. Wearables can provide data that narrows

down the provider’s options. The result is better, more targeted care for

the patient.”

Remote Access to Healthcare

Research shows that more than 70 percent of healthcare providers

are now using telehealth or telemedicine solutions to connect with

patients remotely and provide valuable care. As telemedicine grows,

many aspects of healthcare will presumably become more convenient

and cost-effective.

Apps That Promote Productivity

The role of technology and personal health extends far beyond

healthcare facilities, though. Millions of people experience the positive

effects of productivity- and brain-boosting apps on a daily basis.

Apps like Lumosity help train the brain and improve memory,

attention, and focus. Then there are apps like IFTTT, which help

streamline tasks and make every day processes easier.

Exploring the Negatives

26
ST. ANTHONY’S HIGH SCHOOL OF BARBAZA, INC.
Barbaza, 5706 Antique, Philippines
Cp No. 0917-7237931 E-mail Addressː SAHSBI@yahoo.com

There are certainly some cons, too. Let’s check out three negative

effects that can’t be ignored.

Hearing Loss

Take a look around the next time you’re on the subway, grabbing a

cup of coffee at the local Starbucks, or jogging on a treadmill at the gym.

Many of the people around you will have headphones in. While

convenient, headphones can also be dangerous.

According to this infographic from Rush.edu, headphones at high

volume can reach 105 decibels (louder than a power tool). Listening to

music with headphones for more than five minutes per day at high

volume puts people at an increased risk for permanent hearing loss.

Poor Posture

Not only do computers and devices encourage more sedentary

behaviour among users, but they also frequently lead to poor posture,

neck strain, and back issues. Repeated over long periods of time, this

sort of behaviour can lead to chronic pain and discomfort that isn’t easily

reversed.

Eyestrain

Many people find that overexposure to devices leads to symptoms

of “Computer Vision Syndrome” – which is defined as “the complex of

27

problems associated with excessive screen time, including eyestrain,

blurred vision, and dry eyes.”

While short-term eyestrain can be prevented with smart practices

(and even computer glasses), the long-term impact of overexposure to

screens is yet to be fully understood (and won’t be for a handful of years).

Finding the Right Balance

There’s no turning back at this point. We’re in a society where

technological innovation and progression is the norm; it would take a

minor miracle to reverse course. The key moving forward is to find the

correct balance so that our society enjoys more of the positive benefits

and experiences fewer of the negative side effects. (Cristine Felt, April 12,

2018)

Woman shows signs of digital eye strain. This is one of the most

common concerns associated with the evolution of technology: Do digital

devices really cause eye strain? According to The Vision Council, the

short answer is yes. They write, "Many individuals suffer from physical

eye discomfort after screen use for longer than two hours at a time."

Have you ever looked at your phone in the middle of the night, only to be

partially blinded by the brightness? Our eyes did not develop to read tiny

text on tiny screens with bright lights.

28
ST. ANTHONY’S HIGH SCHOOL OF BARBAZA, INC.
Barbaza, 5706 Antique, Philippines
Cp No. 0917-7237931 E-mail Addressː SAHSBI@yahoo.com

It’s not only our eyes that may be affected, however. Some worry

that digital eye strain may also affect your head, neck, and shoulders,

depending on your posture as you use different devices. If you find

yourself with seemingly causeless head and neck aches, you might want

to consider adjusting your posture and/or reducing your screen time a

bit. You could try reading a book, going for a walk, etc.

For those of us who are required to spend at least eight hours a

week day in front of a computer, The Vision Council gives the following

tips on how to reduce digital eye strain:

Following the 20-20-20 rule, taking a 20-second break from the

screen every 20 minutes and looking at something 20 feet away

Reduce overhead lighting to eliminate screen glare

Position yourself at arm's distance away from the screen for proper

viewing distance when at a computer increase text size on devices to ease

content viewing

Are There Any Positives to Technology’s Effect On Our Health?

There’s something to be said for an age in which counting our

steps via tech tools has become trendy. While physical health is likely

still not as important to as many of us as it should be, smart tech has

29

Cp No. 0917-7237931 E-mail Addressː SAHSBI@yahoo.com

made fitness a lot more fun for some athlete using smartwatch. Here are

some ways that technology has positively impacted our health:

A mobile application called Achievement was designed to connect

to other health and fitness related apps you might have on your phone.

You earn points for any bit of activity you do. Once your reach 10,000

points you earn $10! Most of us would be encouraged to do something

physical if the reward was monetary.

Another app that follows along these same lines is Charity Miles.

With this app, any time you log miles for walking, running, or cycling,

money will be donated to your charity of choice. This technology

positively impacts not only our health, but also our passions for

meaningful causes.

Of course, one of the most incredible things technology has done

for our health is revolutionizing healthcare for the present and future of

humanity. Recently, doctors in Minnesota used 3D printing and virtual

reality to safely and effectively separate conjoined twin infants. Before the

implementation of these types of technologies, those conjoined twins may

not have survived. We also have Chabot’s that are helping to ease new

mothers into the complexities of breastfeeding. And major procedures

have become much less invasive with the implementation of robotic

laparoscopic surgeries.

The point is, even if technology has impacted our health in some

negative ways, it has also provided some incredible positive opportunities

and revolutions for the long-term improvement of our health.

The Use of Technology in Education and Teaching Process

The effective Use of Technology in Education has changed the face

of education and it has created more educational opportunities. Both

teachers and students have benefited from various educational

technologies, teachers have learned how to integrate technology in their

classrooms and students are getting more interested in learning with

technology. The use of technology in education has removed educational

boundaries, both students and teachers can collaborate in real time

using advanced educational technologies.

Technology has helped in the growth of mobile learning and long

distance learning. The use of internet technology has enabled teachers to

reach students across borders and also students from developing

countries have used internet technology to subscribe for advanced

educational courses. Many universities and colleges have embraced

online education by creating virtual classrooms. Online education is

flexible and affordable, students can attend classrooms during their free

time, and they can also have a chance to interact with other students

virtually.

Recent advancements in educational technologies have yielded

positive results in our education sector. This new educational technology

is supporting both teaching and learning processes, technology has

digitized classrooms through digital learning tools like, computers, iPads,

smartphones, smart digital white boards; it has expanded course

offerings, it has increased student’s engagement and motivation towards

learning. Technology should not replace teachers. Its main use is to

enable students learn better through increasing their engagement in

educational activities.

Technology is not having cool ipads or expensive gadgets; it is

about the learning process. Technology has to improve the learning

process and aim at improving student’s grades.

Technology has to facilitate and stimulate individual learning.

Students should use technology to learn on their own with limited help

from advantages of technology in education:

Technology Unlocks Educational Boundaries: Technology supports

Virtual or Online Learning. Unlike physical classrooms, online learning is

flexible and students from different geographical locations can attend the

same class with no need of traveling from those locations. Advancement

in virtual technology has supported face-to-face communication between

students and teachers in the virtual world. In this case, students can

easily ask their remote based educators’ questions using virtual

communication tools like SKYPE. Online education is a new wave in our

education environment and it has made many educational courses and

material accessible to anyone in the world. Many colleges and

universities are blending their educational systems with online learning

tools, this helps students of these institutions learn from anywhere.

Technology Simplifies Access to Educational Resources:

Technology helps students gain access to open educational resources.

These resources are kept under the public domain and are freely

available to anyone over the world-Wide-Web. These educational

resources include electronic books (e-books), pod-casts, digital libraries,

educational games, educational videos and instructions, tutorials and

much more. Teachers have embraced video hosting platforms like

Youtube, to upload recorded lectures, so that students who missed

lectures can access them from anywhere. Also, the use of cell phones for

educational purposes, helps students and teachers access educational

information using Edtech Apps. Teachers are also using lesson videos

and clips online to learn how other educators are using technology in

classroom and education, these techniques and approaches uploaded by

other educators promote self-training and they help many teachers when

it comes to integrating technology in their own classrooms. Website like

TeacherTube, Youtube, 02 Learn, are providing free online lessons and

videos to students, these videos have been created and uploaded by

teachers and experienced educators.

Technology Motivates Students: The use of computer-based

instructions makes students feel in control of what they learn. Students

find it easy to learn with technology because computers are patient

compared to humans. Teachers publish educational instructions on

classroom blogs or they assign research work via email, and this gives a

student time to study on their own and have no fear of making mistakes

during the process of learning. Also the use of Gamification educational

technologies has increased students interest in learning, teachers use

educational puzzles and video games to teach students how to solve

different academic challenges, this all process makes students love to

learn.

Technology Improves Students Writing and Learning Skills: The

use of computers in the classroom has helped many students learn how

to write well composed sentences and paragraphs. Computers have word

processing applications which students use to take notes in the

classroom, these word processing applications have built-in dictionaries

which help students auto-correct spelling errors and also correct their

grammar in a sentence. Also, students using English teaching software

and mobile applications like BUSUU. Many students have used BUSUU

APP to learn different languages online and they can also get access to

grammar guides provided by experienced publishers. Teachers encourage

their students to create personal blogs using free blog publishing

services like BLOGGER & WORDPRESS, students use these blogs to

express themselves and share with friends, this process helps students

learn how to write creative blog posts.

Technology makes subjects easy to learn: Different types of

educational software are designed to help students learn various

subjects easier. Many students complain that learning Math is difficult,

so some of them have decided to use educational Math software like

Braining Camp. Students can use Braining Camp to apply their Math

knowledge and skills to solve different math equations.

BrainingCamp.com makes learning math very interesting. Also students

use math learning games to learn new skills of solving math equations.

Websites like IXL.COM, learninggamesforkids.com, help students of

different grades to learn simple math basics. Teachers and students can

take advantage of sites like Edalive.com; they create powerful

educational software that motivates students to learn in a fun way.

Promotes Individual Learning: Technological tools like cell phones

and internet give students an opportunity to learn by themselves. Many

35

students prefer teaching themselves and discovering content by

themselves, this process allows them to test various options to solve a

given task at school. Students use interactive educational games and

software to develop different academic skills. For example; Art and design

students can use Photoshop software to learn different design and

editing skills, the process of learning how to use Photoshop is tricky, but

the more mistakes and trials a student makes, the better they become at

using Photoshop. Also, the use of cell phones as educational tools

encourages students to download educational podcasts which they can

listen to while at home.

Supports Differentiated Instructions: Teachers can use technology

to cater for each and every student’s needs in the classroom or outside of

the classroom. The use of classroom assessment software and

performance tracking programs helps teachers plan for each student

basing on their performance and learning capabilities. Teachers can be

in position to classify students and know their weakness and strength as

far as education is concerned. Teachers can use mobile applications like

PollEverywhere.com to get student’s response on any topic or subject.

Social collaboration tools like Piazza.com can help teachers create virtual

classroom and assign research work or answer student’s questions from

anywhere.

36
ST. ANTHONY’S HIGH SCHOOL OF BARBAZA, INC.
Barbaza, 5706 Antique, Philippines

Increases Collaboration between Teachers and Students: The use

of advanced communication technologies in education helps teachers

reach their students easily and it also helps students reach their

teachers or fellow students in real-time. Teachers can use mobile texting

applications like Remind101.com to text students about an upcoming

test or to assign them research topics. Educational social networks like

ePals.com connect students with experienced educators; social

bookmarking sites like Pinterest.com help students collaborate and

follow creative teachers and educators from around the world. This

flexibility in interaction and communication between teachers and

students helps shy students improve on their grades.

Prepares Students for Tomorrows Technological Jobs: As the world

develops, every job in the future will require applicants to have some

technical skills. So, the use of technology in education prepares our

children for tomorrows advanced working conditions. Students use

computers in the classroom to develop creative applications which can be

used on cell phones or tablets for educational purposes. The advantages

of knowing how to use a computer are limitless, so the more time a

student spends using various technological tools at school, the more

experienced and creative they become. According to research, the most

popular jobs today will be of no value in the next 5-10 years, because

technology will automate most of these tasks, so it is better to equip our

children with technical skills so that they create their own jobs.

Increases Students Innovation and Creativity: Many teachers have

discovered that integrating technology in their classroom increases

student’s engagement in the classroom. So now they put up

technological competitions where students can make small educational

technologies like robots, smart-pens, mobile applications and much

more. These technological competitions in schools have increased the

level of creativity and innovation among students. Technology teaches

students how to solve challenges and get ready for more difficult tasks in

life.

Summary of Findings

The purpose of this study was to find the effects of massive use of

modern technology to the academic performance of the Grade 11 San

Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila.

Moreover, this study sought answers the following questions:

1. What are the effects of massive use of modern technology to the

academic performance of the G11 San Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila?

2. What are the benefits of Grade 11 San Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila if

they massively use modern technology by themselves?

3. What are the reasons why the students are massively using the

modern technology?

This study was based on the social constructivism theory, a

theory that was coined by John Dewey (1933/1998) and was improved

by Lev Vygotsky (1978). Social constructivism theory is a sociological

theory of knowledge according to which human development is socially

situated and knowledge is constructed through interaction. Questioners

was used in this study as the research design for it fills in the

disadvantage of this method, namely quantitative research method.

The respondents of the study were the 43 Grade 11 San Lorenzo

Ruiz de Manila purposively taken for the study.
