GROUP 3

Jeriel C. Ranchez
Learning Area: Disaster Readiness and Risk Reduction
GRADE LEVEL: 12
Content Standard: Performance Standard:
The learners demonstrate understanding of: The learners develop a family emergency
- Signs of impending volcanic eruptions preparedness plan to guide them on what to
- Potential volcano-related hazards: do before, during, and after a volcanic
1. Lahar eruption
2. Ash fall
3. Pyroclastic flow
4. Ballistic projectile
5. Volcanic gasses
6. Lava flow
Learning Competencies:
- Interpret different volcano hazard maps (DRR11/12-Ih-i-25); and
- Apply appropriate measures/interventions before, during, and after a volcanic
eruption. (DRR11/12-Ih-i-26)
Time Allotment: ~60 minutes
Phase Procedure
Review the concept of Volcanic Eruptions (~5 minutes)
- Students will be called one at a time to explain possible events
before, during and after a volcanic eruption. (From DRR11/12-
ELICIT Ih-i-22-24)
& Demonstrate volcano related hazards (~5 minutes)
ENGAGE - “Hazardous Charades”. Students will be asked to demonstrate
every volcano-related hazard by only using bodily actions. The
rest of the class will then guess what hazard is being
demonstrated. (From DRR11/12-Ih-i-22-24)
Inquiry-based Research Activity (~10 minutes)
Activity: “Caption This!”
- The teacher will show videos of Lahar, Ash fall, Pyroclastic
flow, Ballistic projectile, Volcanic gasses, and Lava flow. (From
EXPLORE DRR11/12-Ih-i-22-24)
- Students will be tasked to think of appropriate safety
precautions them and their family could take if they are in the
general danger zone before, during, and after a volcanic
eruption while watching the videos.
Reporting (~10 minutes)
- The students will then be grouped and tasked to present their
findings to the class.
Safety measures before, during, and after a volcanic eruption (~15
minutes)
EXPLAIN - The teacher will show a blank, color coded volcano hazard map
& of several active volcanoes in the Philippines, as well as
ELABORATE discuss the different parts of the volcano hazard map. The
teacher will then guide the students to put appropriate labels on
the map. (DRR11/12-Ih-i-25)
- The teacher will discuss the safety measures recommended by
the PHIVOLCS. (DRR11/12-Ih-i-26)
Assessment of the activity “Caption This” (10 minutes)
- After the discussion, the teacher will then check if the students’
findings from the activity are in line with the PHIVOLCS
recommendations.
EVALUATE - The teacher will then summarize the discussion by making a
table of safety measures with two columns; column 1 is for the
PHIVOLCS recommendations, and column 2 for the personal
safety measures of the students from their findings, if any.
Short quiz about the topic
Additional safety measures (~5 minutes)
- As an assignment, the students will list safety measures
applicable to their family relative to their place of residence if
EXTEND
the Pinatubo Eruption of 1991 happens in the present. It should
include the measures before, during, and after a volcanic
eruption.
