Means and Nth terms of a Sequence First Edition, 2020
I. CONCEPT NOTE
The nonzero constant is the common ratio in a geometric sequence is denoted by r. if a 1 is the first term,
then the second term is a1r, the third term is a1r2, and so on. We can write a general formula for the nth term of
a geometric sequence as follows:
.

Deped Mathematics– Grade 10 Alternative Delivery Mode Quarter 1 – Module 8: Determining
Means and Nth terms of a Sequence First Edition, 2020
In previous lesson, we defined a geometric sequence as a sequence in which each successive term is
obtained from the preceding term by multiplying it by a fixed number called the common ratio. To get the
common ratio, divide the succeeding term by its preceding term.
I. CONCEPT NOTES
We described arithmetic means as the terms between two non-consecutive terms of an arithmetic
sequence. Similarly, inserting a certain number of terms between two non-consecutive terms in a geometric
sequence is called geometric means. In the sequence 1, 4, 16, 64, 256, ..., the three geometric means between
1 and 256 are 4, 16, and 64. We can use the common ratio to find the geometric means of a given sequence.
