GUIDE QUESTIONS
1. What types of boundaries do setups 1, 2 and 3 represent?
- The types of boundaries that setups 1, 2 and 3 represent are plate boundaries. The setup 1
represents Transform plate boundary or also known as strike-slip boundary. A transform plate
boundary occurs when two plates slide past each other horizontally, and in this boundary, plates
are neither created nor destroyed. While setup 2 represents divergent plate boundary, sometimes
called as constructive boundary. This boundary occurs when two tectonic plates move away from
each other. And lastly, setup 3 represents convergent plate boundary or destructive boundary, it
is where two plates move towards each other.
2. Compare the movements of the flour during the experiment with the actual movement of plate
boundaries.
- Though there is a difference between the substance of real earth and the flour used in the video,
compared to the actual movement of plate boundaries, the movements of the flour are quite
similar to the actual one. For example, setup 3 follows the movement of the convergent plate
boundary which is the subduction of a plate under another plate. Another example, setup 2 also
depicts the same movements of the divergent plate boundary which is the moving away of two
tectonic plates from one another and left a rift in between the two plates. And lastly, setup 1 also
shows the same movement of the transform plate boundary as the two cardboards pass one
another and neither destroy nor create plates.
3. What landforms were developed after the experiments?
- During the experiment, setup 1 which represent transform boundary developed none. While
setup 2 that represents divergent boundary developed rift-like landforms during the experiment.
And lastly, setup 3 which represents convergent boundary developed mountain-like landform
during the experiment.
