“Using Cookies to Understand Plate Boundaries”

Analysis Questions:

1. What sound did you hear when you broke one side of the cookie in half?
When I broke one side of the cookie I heard a breaking or a cracking sound.

2. What does that breaking represent?

The breaking represents an earthquake. The break represents the plate
boundaries.
3. What happened to the creamy filling after sliding the cookie halves apart?
(divergent)
I noticed that the creamy filling between the two broken “plates” may
tend to flow upward, similar to the rising, decompression, and partial melting of
hot asthenosphere at mid-ocean ridges and continental rift zones. It creates a
ridge.

4. What happened to the creamy filling after sliding the cookie halves toward each
other? (convergent)
The creamy filling buckled upward. In the activity, the creamy filling
represents the collision zone between the two converging continental plates. It
will form mountain ranges on the surface of the Earth just like the formation of
Himalayas mountains over India.
5. What happened to the creamy filling after sliding the cookie halves across each
other? (transform)

I slid the two cookie pieces laterally past one another, over the creamy
filling. You can feel and hear that the “plates” do not slide smoothly past one
another, but rather stick then let go, stick then let go.

CONCLUSION:

Based on the activity that you did, define the following terms on your own
understanding:

Divergent Boundary: Divergent boundary can be defined as a tectonic boundary

where two plates and a new crust is formed that rises from the surface between two
plates. Divergent boundary occurs when two tectonic plates move away from each
other. Divergent means moving apart.

Convergent Boundary: Convergent Boundary occurs when two plates come together.
Convergent boundary occurs when continental and oceanic plates collide.
Convergent from the word converge means moving toward each other.

Transform Boundary: Transform boundary occurs when two plates slide past one
another. It can also be defined for me as a third type of boundary where two plates
slide past one another without production or destruction of the crust. At the transform
boundary a lithosphere is neither created nor destroyed.
