Lesson Children will use a mixture of baking soda and vinegar in a pumpkin to make a pumpkin-Cano
Summary:

Estimated Children will take roughly twenty minutes each, rotating centers as they go, as this is a center based

Preparation What preparation is needed? Pumpkins need hollowed, materials bought/gathered

environment What materials will be used? Pumpkins, baking soda, vinegar, food coloring (for vinegar)
droppers, small cups, small spoons.

How will the learning environment be set up? Each seat will have a tray with the pumpkin, a
small cup on vinegar, a small cup of baking soda and a small spoon for the baking soda, as
well as an eyedropper for the vinegar, “safety goggles” and lab coats

Instructional Procedures: (This will be one of the most detailed sections of this assignment).
During center time, children will have the opportunity to visit the science center where, with teacher assistance, they
can make pumpkin-cano’s! The students will be able to spoon in the baking soda and drop the vinegar into the pumpkins
as they please to create a small or GIANT eruption. They will record what they see on their journals.

allows the child to participate in the activity and experience the activity as well. recording for them as well.

can always do baking soda activities with students for the different seasons.
