Basic Productivity Tools (BPT)

Lesson Idea Name: Soil, rocks, and water, Oh My!

Content Area/Grade(s): Kindergarten
Content Standard Summarized: Students should be able to identify and describe some earth
materials such as soil, rocks, and water.

SKP1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to describe objects in terms of the
materials they are made of and their physical attributes.

a. Ask questions to identify and describe earth materials—soil, rocks, water, and air.

Technology Standard Addressed:

Creative Communicator
Students communicate clearly and express themselves creatively for a variety of purposes using the
platforms, tools, styles, formats and digital media appropriate to their goals.

Selected Technology Tool: E-book through Power point

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☒ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration

☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☒ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. All products of learning are unique and
personalized. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator walking around monitoring the student-led
activity.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

I will support the variety of learners in my classroom by allow students to work in pairs for this assignment.
Students will also have the option to work individually if they choose to do so. I also will give different options
for the products we will be using. For instance, I will be laying out some water, soil, and rocks. The student
has the option to focus on whichever material they choose to. As well, I will always keep items such as stress
balls and preferential seating in my class in case my students feel more comfortable using that. My e-book will
serve as a tool to get students to brainstorm about what earth material they want to identify and describe.

Basic Productivity Tools (BPT)

The e-book I created is a tool that will engage students and get them thinking about the lesson further. It
allows the student to really explore their previous knowledge on earth materials and gather what they want
to learn more about. Further, this tool allows students to have options on how they want to express their
learning for the remainder of the lesson. The e-book will introduce the students to many earth materials they
can choose themselves to focus on.

Lesson idea implementation:

First, I will hand out some physical earth materials. I will be handing out a rock, cup of soil, and cup of water.
Then I will give students time to explore and feel the materials. Next, I will play the e-book I created
explaining some of the characteristics of each material. After the e-book, students will be asked to work with
a partner and pick one earth material presented that they want to discuss. Each pair of students will create a
product such as a Seesaw video or poster that will identify and describe 2 characteristics of the material. I will
extend the student learning to a higher level by asking students to create a project that exemplifies their
knowledge and understanding of earth materials.

Reflective Practice: One thing that I really enjoy about this lesson that I designed is that it is meant to be
hands on. With kindergartens, many need a kinesthetic approach so using manipulatives is really helpful.
Further, I can extend this lesson easily by allowing students to go home and identify more earth materials,
such as air. This provides opportunity for students to continue learning after the lesson is completed. Also,
the e-book I created for the lesson is extremely engaging and should get students excited and intrigued about
earth materials. Also, the final part of this lesson is to create a product using Seesaw or a poster. This allows
students to have creativity in how they want to express themselves using technology.
