Subject Matter: RECYCLABLE MATERIALS

Competency: Recognize the importance of recycle, reduce, reuse, recover
and repair in waste management. (S5-MT-le-g-3)
Objective: At the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify local and
recyclable solid, and/or liquid materials that can be used in
making useful products.
No. of Days One (1) day

Background

Nowadays, we are facing an urgent issue that the temperature of the earth is
increasing. What’s causes this phenomena? Is the global warming? Hence, what
should we do to help reducing this problem? The only thing that we should do is
coming out with some solutions. The simple and easy thing that we could do is
taking part in the activities of recycling or seminars involving about the benefits of
recycling.

Practicing the 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle) every day is not only important for
a healthy environment but also a good method of waste management. Recycling is
very important. It helps us reduce the pollution caused by waste, and reduce the
need for raw materials so that the rainforests can be preserved.

General Instructions

Module 7 Lesson 1 contains six pages which provide a variety of interesting

activities for individual practice and an answer sheets. The following are important
reminders in using this module:

1. Use this module with care. Do not write anything on each page of the module.
Use a separate sheet(s) of paper for your answers to the different activities or
tasks.
2. Read carefully the Guide Card before proceeding to the next activities.
3. Read carefully the direction/ instructions of each activity before doing the
tasks.
4. Finish the first activity before doing the next one.

can apply paint and put some decorations to make them more colorful and attractive.
Plastic bottles can be made as pen holders, coin purses and improvised chandelier.

WASTE MATERIALS USEFUL PRODUCTS

In this lesson, you are going to identify the local waste materials found in your
home and community that can be recycled or can be used to make useful products.
What is recyclable material mean? These are waste materials that can be
remanufactured into something new again.

The standard materials that get recycled are: plastic bottles, pieces of paper,

Have you seen this pile of wastes? Where do you think these wastes come
from? Look at the picture below.

We need to practice the 5Rs waste management in order to free Planet Earth
from any kind of garbage. Each “R” focuses to achieve “zero waste”.
Reduce- Lessen the use of unnecessary materials.
Reuse- Use again the materials for other purposes.
Recycle- Make the waste materials to new materials
Recover- Take the energy of your waste products for the new products.
Repair- Fix the broken materials for the purposes.
This module will allow you to demonstrate the 5Rs. Upon seeing these
wastes, what‘s in your mind? Do you think you can make money out of these? How
can you manage these wastes?
Let us help each other to keep our environment healthy and protect our
Mother Earth in danger. As you go along with the various activities on this lesson,
you will be able to learn how important the 5R’s waste management is.

 Conduct survey of most common recyclable materials found at

Background

Managing waste is every one’s responsibility. We live in a beautiful world. It is

our duty to protect, preserve, and conserve our environment.
When you throw away a material, you just remove it from the house, but it
does not disappear. Shape or form might change but it could still present somewhere
else. The more waste we discarded, the more trash piles up.
Recyclable materials are usually found in our homes, school and in the
community. Those materials are very useful to us if only we can manage to recycle
them. Recycling is one way of helping and protecting our environment to lessen the
pollution and to avoid harmful effects on humans and in the environment.
To recycle means to use the material again in another way or for another
purpose.
Practicing the 5rs makes our environment clean and beautiful.

Have you ever observed the recyclable waste in our surroundings? What are
those recyclable materials found at home, school and in the community?
In order to keep our homes, schools and communities healthful, we should
practice proper waste management. First, is identification and separation of waste
from biodegradable, non-biodegradable, recyclable and hazardous waste.
For this lesson, you will learn about making a survey of most common
recyclable materials found at home, school and in the community.
All you have to do is to survey which materials are commonly found at home,
school and in the community by using a survey form.
Are you excited to go around and make a survey? But before doing that, you
should observe health protocols in this time of pandemic. Before going around, ask
first the permission of your parents and always wear your facemasks.
I have prepared set of activities that will help you learn, understand, and
answer some questions. Isn’t fantastic?
Just go over this worksheet…. try to answer the given activities… surely you
will have a wonderful day!!!

Lesson 5

NO MATTER HOW
SMALL!
TITLE CARD
___________________________________________________________________
Subject Matter: Importance of Practicing the 5Rs
Competency: Recognize the importance of recycle, reduce, reuse, recover, and
repair in waste management (S5MT-le-g-3)
Objective: At the end of this lesson, you will be able to explain ways
in making useful materials and product.
No. of Day/s: One (1) day

*The importance of 5Rs (recycle, reduce, reuse, recover and repair)
* It saves energy, time and money
* Preserving new materials
* Reducing air and water pollution
* Saves the environment

GUIDE CARD
___________________________________________________________________

Did you know that there two good reasons why recycling is needed? First if
we recycle our trash the garbage dumps will not filled quickly. Second, recycling can
be of giving opportunities to create new products out of those recyclable materials.
The benefits are far reaching and everybody gains when people adopt
recycling as an everyday habit. Whether it is a community effort to help beautify a
dirty neighborhood street, or on a larger scale to help a business save hundreds to
thousands of pesos on waste management, the advantages of well-maintained
recycling program are endless.
The waste we generate everyday is more than what landfills can
accommodate. That is why some wastes are left uncollected in different places.
Therefore, we should practice 5Rs to manage wastes and lessen the environmental
problems. And there are ways to help in recycling. First, get involved with local
recycling programs, volunteer to educate a class at a local elementary school.
Kids can be huge advocates for the war on trash easily holding everyone
around them accountable for the things they throw in the garbage. Take some time to
go around and pick up trash in your own neighborhood or surround ones. If your job
does not have a receptacle for recyclable products, ask if they wouldn’t mind
providing one, or if they mind you providing one yourself. Make sure to practice
proper recycling habits in your own life, nothing works better than leading by
example. As a kid you can make recyclable materials beautiful and useful if you
know how to recycle them. Instead of buying things we need, we should try to create
useful things that we need from waste materials. In this way we can save money and
preserve the environment.
In this lesson we are going to explore and learn the different ways on how to
make the recyclable materials into useful one.
Are you ready now?
Just go over this worksheet…. try to answer the given activities… surely you
will have a wonderful day!!!
