can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions,
directions, exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand
each lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-
step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.
In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also
provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they
can best help you on your home-based learning.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any
part of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and
tests. And read the instructions carefully before performing each task.

What I Need to Know
It’s a brand-new day! Do you know that there is truth in saying “There is
money in waste”? Yes, all we need is a little entrepreneurial ability and a lot of
environmental concern. Instead of throwing our waste and scrap into our home and
absolutely wasting it, we should build and recycle it into useful, artistic fragments
for personal and home use. Recycling helps protect the environment, saves money,
and also reduces emissions of greenhouse gases, which helps mitigate climate
change.
In this module you will learn about the recycling awareness and skills. How to
make new product out of waste like used magazines, newspapers, catalogue and
scratch papers, empty wrappers and old clothes?
Lesson 1: Recycling
Lesson 2: Create Recycled Project: Basket Making
Lesson 3: Create Recycled Project: Pillow Making
Lesson 4: Create Recycled Project: Pillowcase Making
Note: This module will be completed for 11 days. Lesson 1 will be 2 days, Lesson 2
to 4 will be 3 days.

What is It
Recycling is a method of converting an object that has already served its original
function but can still be used for another purpose.
Advantages of Recycling
1. Decrease pollution, and reduce waste emissions
2. Preserve resources
3. Strengthen creativity and originality
4. Potential to make companies profitable
5. Make people aware of the climate
6. Encourage scientific progress in materials that are recyclable and
biodegradable.
7. Enable governments and businesses to choose programs and to follow rules with
preservation in mind.
8. Help create jobs in the recycling and manufacturing sectors.
9. Increase economic stability by drawing on a domestic content supply.
Many residual materials can be recycled. Paper is one of the most abundant
and available waste materials in cities, as well as in many rural areas, plastic
containers would come as second and tin cans as third. The clothes used are also
plentiful.
The table below shows the lists of materials that can be recycled.
Resources Articles

pieces, paper beads, paper sculpture, covers for
albums, and Paper Mache

What’s In
You have learned about the origin of recycling in your previous lesson; its
advantages, its types and the materials used in recycling. This time you will study
the principles of paper folding (origami) and create a beautiful basket which is a
perfect centerpiece for your coffee table or a gift for a loved one and will inspire and
impress everyone who sees it.
To determine if you have already knowledge in recycled basket making, please do
the activity below.
What’s New
Origami is a Japanese term ori and kami.”ori” means "folding", and kami
meaning "paper" (kami is changed to gami due to rendaku) which means the art of
paper folding, which is often linked with Japanese culture.

What is It
History of Origami
Origami of Classic and Traditional Origin
Paper was first invented around 105 A.D. in China, and in the sixth century
was brought to Japan by monks. Handmade paper was a luxury object for a few,
and paper folding in ancient Japan was primarily for ceremonial purposes, mostly
religious in nature.
By the Edo period (1603–1868), paper folding had become both recreational and
ceremonial in Japan, sometimes featuring numerous cuts and folds. It came to be
recognized as a modern art form allowed by the invention of paper, both mass –
produced and more affordable.
Written instructions for paper folding first appeared in 1797, with Sembazuru
Orikata, by Akisato Rito or “thousand crane folding.” In Europe and Japan by the
1800s, kindergarten-aged children were studying paper folding.
Modern Origami
Akira Yoshizawa, who died at the age of 94 in 2005, is believed to be one of
the progenitors of modern origami. In the 1930s, using a series of symbols, arrows
and diagrams, he developed a method of folding patterns.
Those patterns were published and widely available by the 1950s, leading to the
global scope and standardization of origami. Yoshizawa and other masters of
origami founded local and international organizations which promoted the craft.

can be placed at each overlap to hold it in place if necessary.
______2. Simple fold all strips up at 90 degrees for the side of the basket, and
continue weaving.
______3. Bend your side strips at the corners, and continue to weave along
the adjacent edges.
______4. Add a double-folded strip along the top edge. This could add force to
the top rim. Glue over the inside of the basket.
______5. Fold each page along its length in half, then into eighths. The
resulting rectangular strips should be about 1-1⁄2 inches x 22 inches.
______6. Remove the fold from the section of your paper to each of the 12
